Pergola: The Outdoor Room

Pergola: The Outdoor Room

The pergola. It is a way of covering your outdoor area. A way of shading from the sun and elements. The design may vary and they can be built buy an architect or by you but the use remains the same. A pergola is bassically a way for you to bring the indoors out. This could be something that many of you are considering and as such you may be in search of pergola ideas. A different way to go about the backyard pergola. It is essential that we first cover what the pergola is.

Back in medieval times the pergola, which was then referred to as a trellis, were used between spaces to again shade from the elements. The pergola is constructed by interweaving beams of a particular building material. The designs are endless and I have seen pergolas which were composed of beams which all ran form left to right, beams which were cross hatched, and curved beams. Your pergola idea can completely or partially cover your outdoor area. Of course the closer together the beams the more shade that will be provided.

After the structures are built there are many different things you can do to decorate them. You could hang draperies from them or across the beams. These are both methods to add to the amount of shade the pergola will provide. Also you could go natural and train vines to grow across them which can look beautiful. The vines you choose may be plain vines, vines with flowers, or even vines with fruit.

Underneath the pergola is where your pergola idea will really change form idea to an outdoor room really You could place furniture under the pergola and have an extra spot to entertain and relax. Placing a outdoor dining table and some chair will allow for a casual dining area in the fresh air. A grill and some areas to prep, whether they be built in or just tables, allow for an outdoors cooking area in the shade. (You have enough heat coming from the grill as it is.)

Truly there are a multitude of pergola ideas out there for you to try. All you need is some creativity and remember for it to go from vacant shaded structure to outdoor room a few thing are required. First, cover the area to suit the amount of sunlight you want to let in. Use either drapes, vines, or nothing at all. Next, place outdoor furniture under the space. (I know you want to save money and move pieces from the house outside but trust me on this one.) Make sure the furniture is cohesive with what you want the space to be. Last, enjoy!

Drake and Lil Wayne fight lawsuit over Vegas no-show | RapMusic ...

Young Money superstars Drake and Lil Wayne are currently battling a lawsuit accusing them of pulling a no-show at a Las Vegas nightclub last year. According to TMZ, a judge ordered both rappers to pay $432,337.50 to the Imperial Entertainment Group for their alleged 2011 no-show but the rappers claim they were never told about the supposed club appearance and they never signed any contract.

Both rappers also claim they were not served with summonses to show up in court and that the third party that Imperial Entertainment Group used, Melanzh Enterprises, had no authority to book them.

Lil Wayne and Drake want the $432,337.50 judgement scratched. It?s unclear if and when the appeal will bring the case back to the courtroom. In related news, Drake is currently selling out shows with his ?Club Paradise? tour which launched in Los Angeles earlier this month. UK PM's ex-spin doctor charged in perjury case

Facundo Arrizabalaga / EPA, file

Andy Coulson, a former editor of Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World newspaper, later served as a spin doctor for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

Updated at 5:55 p.m. ET: LONDON -- A former spokesman for Britain?s prime minister was?charged Wednesday with?perjury during a high-profile court case in Scotland involving a politician?-- a move that brings the Rupert Murdoch phone-hacking scandal closer to the heart of government.

Andy Coulson, who worked as David Cameron's director of communications, was held in London by detectives investigating claims he committed perjury during?the trial of a politician accused of taking part in adulterous, drug-fueled sex orgies at swingers' clubs.

Coulson, 44, was?transferred north from London to Glasgow, Scotland, for questioning on Wednesday, according to Britain?s Sky News.

Strathclyde Police issued a statement that said: "Officers from Strathclyde Police's Operation Rubicon team detained a 44-year-old man in London this morning under section 14 of the Criminal Procedure Scotland Act 1995 on suspicion of committing perjury before the High Court in Glasgow."

'War criminal': Tony Blair heckled while testifying about Murdoch links

Coulson resigned from his job as the Cameron?s chief spin doctor in January 2011 amid growing public anger over the phone-hacking scandal.

Prior to working for Cameron, he was editor of the News of the World, the now-defunct Murdoch Sunday tabloid. He resigned from that job in 2007 - also over phone hacking.

Now he is implicated in another long-running saga ? that of Tommy Sheridan, a lawmaker and icon of left-wing Scottish politics.

Britain's PM eats humble pie over snack tax

Coulson gave evidence in a 2010 Glasgow High Court trial at which Sheridan was jailed for three years for lying under oath during his earlier defamation action against the News of the World in 2006, STV News reported.

Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail make a statement outside the High Court in Glasgow, Scotland, on Dec. 23 2010.

Sheridan had won ?200,000 in damages over an article that said he had committed adultery, visited a swingers' club and taken part in drug-fueled orgies.

Giving evidence at the 2010 trial, Coulson denied being involved in, or aware of, any illegal activities, including phone hacking, the BBC reported.

Earlier this month, Coulson appeared in front of an ongoing inquiry into press standards where he revealed he still held shares in Murdoch?s News Corp. while working as working as Cameron?s director of communications.

'Dogs in the City' Premiere And More Summer TV Shows About Dogs

LOS ANGELES ? Summer television used to mean reruns. This year it's gone to the dogs.

Several new shows star dogs and their owners in need of help. CBS has the lone network show in "Dogs in the City," starring comic, dog trainer and businessman Justin Silver. It's joined by documentaries on PBS and HBO and a series in the works for the Disney Channel, among others.

Each Wednesday at 8 p.m., beginning May 30, Silver will try to help hound and human tackle unsettling problems like joint custody after divorce or dealing with significant others who just moved in.

Is man or mutt usually to blame for problems? It's 50-50, he said, but "a dog's behavior is shaped by the people in its life."

Silver says he won't be the one solving problems, even though he jokes that he speaks dog. Instead he will provide techniques and experiences so owners can fix their own problems.

"It's that old adage: Give a man a fish and you'll fill his belly. Teach him how to fish and he'll never starve. I am teaching you how to fish. But no one learns how to fish perfectly in one hour. It takes constant practice."

If intervention is needed, he will call on his own pit bulls, Chiquita and Pacino. "I use my dogs as much as possible because the thing that influences dogs most is other balanced dogs," he said.

"Dogs in the City" seems to have a lot in common with "The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" on the National Geographic Channel and "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stilwell on Animal Planet. "Bad Dog!" is another Animal Planet show, although it uses videotape to capture misbehavior in a test of sorts to see how far an owner's love will stretch.

Documentaries airing in May and June explore the rewards and redemption of shelter dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says between 5 million and 7 million companion animals enter shelters every year and between 3 million and 4 million of them are euthanized.

"Shelter Me," a PBS documentary, is narrated by actress Katherine Heigl and is sponsored by the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres.

It follows an animal control officer, adoption workers, female inmates who train rescue dogs, and vets who acquire former shelter dogs.

"`Shelter Me' is about the lives that are changed when shelter pets are given a second chance," Heigl said.

Andrew J. Trotto, an Army veteran from Mission Viejo, was teamed up with Teka, a black Lab rescued from a Wyoming shelter by Freedom Service Dogs in Englewood, Colo.

"If it wasn't for her, I'd be dead right now," Trotto says in the film.

"I was an evil person. I hated you or wanted to kill you," he said, describing the PTSD demons that haunted him. "People say suicide is selfish. But when you are in the zone, you're not thinking about that. The terror in your head drives you insane. She (Teka) will wake me up out of my night terrors."

"Shelter Me" will air across the country in late May and June.

HBO will premiere a documentary called "One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal" on June 18 at 9 p.m.

The film looks at America's obsession with dogs, how far individuals will go for their pets and what it will take for people across the country to treat all dogs humanely.

The 73-minute documentary looks at the odds stacked against shelter dogs, spay and neuter education, puppy mills, dog bite victims and how some owners respond when their dog attacks.

The Disney Channel also has a new dog show in the works for the fall and while it does involve a rescue dog, that's where reality ends.

The live-action, multi-camera series called "Dog With A Blog" and revolves around a dog named Stan (who is really a 4-year-old named Kuma).

In real life, Kuma is a husky, golden retriever and border collie mix who was rescued from a shelter. In the show, he is adopted to tame a pair of feuding stepbrothers. Turns out Stan can read, write and blog.

Social Networking Still Has Its Charm ? experts-comptables-fr.org

The power of communication trough the Internet has made social networking so popular these days. However, many online marketers still have a misconception that the Social networking arena is over-crowded and is no-more good for business promotion, according to the professional social networking web designers of socialnetworkingwebsitedesign

[Place, Date] ? ?Today, there are countless number of social networking websites that bring the world closer together. This opportunity has been used by businessmen around the globe to connect to more people and increase there sales. However due to the crowded social networking space, online marketers are struggling to get noticed in the social media crowd?, says Mr. Jonathan Mac of socialnetworkingwebsitedesign

?We have heard many people say that social networking is over crowded to such an extent that it is not good for business promotion anymore. Lemme point out that ?a crowded place is the one to look for effective business promotion. This crowded social networking should be considered as an opportunity to promote their business more effectively than ever before. All they have to do is to make their social networking website design unique to get highlighted in the crowd? says Mr. Jonathan Mac

When asked about effective social networking web design, Mr. Jonathan Mac said, ?There are many social networking website templates that are ready to be used. Though using these templates are free and are easy to use, they will not be unique. These social networking websites created using the templates will eventually disappear in the Social networking crowd. It is always better to hire a professional social networking website designer. It will be worth every single penny that you spend.?

He added that ?when it comes to creating your own social networking website, you should ask few questions to yourself (say) why should people ignore popular social networking websites like Myspace and facebook to visit your own social networking website. The answer is ? be unique and provide the users with something useful. The social networking softwares come in handy here. These interactive softwares will keep the users of your website engaged and will make them return to your site.?

He concluded saying, ?Unique, useful social networking websites are always welcomed by the Internet users. Hence the success in social networking website entirely depends on the social networking website design.?

Even if NATO rushes to the exits, Afghan collapse is not inevitable

As French President Hollande promises troop withdrawal this year, and the rest of NATO plans to exit by 2014, Afghanistan's best hope may be the disunity and ill-discipline of the Taliban.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / May 25, 2012

Afghan President Hamid Karzai shakes hands with French President Francois Hollande upon his arrival to Kabul, Afghanistan, Friday, May, 25. Hollande announced that his country's troops had carried out their mission in Afghanistan and that it was time for them to leave, an early pullout that will be coordinated with the United States and other allies.

In August 2010, when the Netherlands pulled 1,900 soldiers out of the Afghan province of Urozgan, NATO officials played down the significance of the withdrawal. Dutch Gen. Peter van Uhm praised his troops for restoring peace to their area, but admitted that ?a lot still has to happen? in Afghanistan to guarantee the peace.

Today, as newly elected French President Fran?ois Hollande visits 3,500 French troops based in the Afghan province of Kapisa, preparing them for an early departure by the end of 2012, NATO officials are wearing the brave face again. At the Afghan summit in Chicago, no NATO official publicly criticized the French leader?s decision following a decisive victory for Hollande?s party, which had promised an early exit from Afghanistan.

?Only France can decide what France does. It will be conducted in good understanding with our allies, especially President Obama, who understands the reasons, and in close consultation with Afghan authorities," President Hollande told reporters in Kabul during a brief stopover. ?Without having totally disappeared, the terrorist threat from Afghanistan to our and our allies' territory has been partially curbed," he added.

In his meetings with French soldiers in Kapisa, Hollande came close to his own ?Mission Accomplie? moment, telling his troops that one reason for their early departure is that ?simply, you have carried out your mission."

In NATO?s 130,000 man International Security and Assistance Force in Afghanistan, the departure of 3,500 soldiers is not significant, particularly if the bulk of those 126,500 other soldiers will be leaving in two years? time anyway. President Obama himself plans to withdraw some 30,000 US troops this year, and most, but not all, of the remaining 60,000 troops by 2014. Afghan officials say that Afghan Army soldiers will take over the French base in Nijrab, Kapisa, and with it, the responsibility of maintaining security in that northeastern part of the country.

Yet as the Dutch departure of 2,000 troops in 2010 ? prompted by a resounding defeat of the pro-NATO government of Jan-Peter Balkenende ? and the French departure in 2012 ? prompted by the defeat of Nicolas Sarkozy ? shows, European patience with the 10-year Afghan operation has worn out. The rush for the exits has begun.

Greek euro exit would be a recipe for hardship

Uncertainty over Greece's future in the eurozone has hammered markets ahead of June 17 general elections in the crisis-hit country. The Greek share index touched new 22-year lows, dipping below 500 points on Friday. (AP Photo/Thanassis Stavrakis)

(AP) ? As Greece creaks under its untenable debt and a shrinking economy, the possibility that it could stop using the euro is becoming increasingly likely. The effects of such a move would be as quick as they would be brutal for ordinary Greeks, who would essentially take a 50-percent pay cut just as prices soar.

Here's a look at what else could happen:

THE RETURN OF THE DRACHMA

No other country has ever left the 17-country eurozone before and there are no procedures in the EU's vast rulebook that would push any country out. But one fear is that the Greeks could decide to vote in an anti-austerity government on June 17 that may then decide to renege on the terms of the multi-billion-euro bailout which has been keeping the country afloat. Greece could be then forced into a messy exit from the euro bloc. It would then have no choice but to start printing its own currency ? the drachma ? to pay its way.

According to the Greek think tank Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), such a move would hit the Greek people hard ? and quickly. The new drachma would lose half or more of its value relative to the euro. This would drive up inflation and sap the purchasing power of the average Greek. At the same time, the country's economic output would drop, putting more people out of work where one in five is already unemployed. The prices of imported goods would skyrocket, putting them out of reach for many.

THE DASH FOR CASH

The prospect of Greece leaving the euro and dealing with a devalued drachma has already prompted many people to start withdrawing their euros out of the country's banks.

"Fear has gripped many who are withdrawing their money," said IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas.

Although the latest bank deposit figures aren't yet available, Greek President Karolos Papoulias last week said about ?700 million ($898 million) in deposits was taken out of banks the week after the May 6 election. What's more, according to central bank data, Greek banks have been hemorrhaging money for almost three years now ? from a high of ?237.8 billion ($302.5 billion) worth of deposits in Sept. 2009 down to ?165.3 billion ($210.3 billion) in March this year.

A victory for anti-bailout lawmakers in the June 17 election would likely trigger an even bigger bank run, said Dimitris Mardas, associate professor of economics at the University of Thessaloniki. Greek authorities, Mardas predicts, would respond by imposing controls on the movement of money for as long as it takes for the panic to subside.

WHAT ABOUT HOMES AND SAVINGS?

As the new drachma quickly loses its value against other currencies, ordinary Greeks' savings and pensions will shrink just as rapidly. Analyst Vangelis Agapitos estimates that inflation under the new drachma would quickly reach 40 to 50 percent to catch up with the fall in the new currency's value. This would make everything much more expensive.

"People are going to need five times the amount of money they would have needed to purchase something," Agapitos said.

To stop the falling value of the drachma, interest rates would have to be increased to as high as 30 to 40 percent, according to Agapitos. People will then be unable to pay off their loans and mortgages and the country's banks would have to be nationalized to stop them from going under, he predicts.

FEW BENEFITS FOR BUSINESS

Some Greeks believe quitting the euro would boost the country's economy as a devalued drachma would make Greek exports cheaper.

But Constantine Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says Greece doesn't have a strong enough export-oriented economy to take advantage of a devalued currency. The country currently imports twice as much as it exports.

"Without any real heavy industry, the Greek economy can't exploit this advantage," Michalos said. "Our main industry is tourism, but in a chaotic situation, which tourist would choose to come to Greece right after the country goes back to the drachma?"

To get its international bailouts, Greece had to embark on a series of economic and market reforms such as reducing a bloated public sector and cutting red tape. Agapitos warns that if Greece dumps the euro, the incentive to carry out these reforms would evaporate, hurting Greece's competitiveness.

GETTING IT ON THE BLACK MARKET

A drachma that is dwindling in value means that even basic, foreign-produced goods such as medicines or fuel will cost much more. Almost inevitably, a thriving black market would emerge, taking more steam out of the economy just as bank loans become much more difficult to pay off.

Vangelis, a 58-year-old former customs official who didn't want to give his full name, worried that going back to the drachma would return Greece to the abject poverty of 1940s when it was under Nazi occupation.

"We'll be paying half our salary for a can of olive oil ... Greeks can't be thinking about returning to the drachma. It would be a catastrophe, a catastrophe," Vangelis said.

TURNING TO A LIFE OF CRIME?

With all the pain a drachma-based economy would induce, IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas foresees an increase in crime as people struggle to pay bills. "We won't see tanks in the streets and violence, we won't see people starving in the streets, but crime could very well rise," he said.

Others reject the apocalyptic scenarios altogether, saying Greeks will fall back on their resourcefulness to overcome hard times and lend a hand to those less well off.

"The way things are now, it can't get any worse," says Athens resident Tasos Schinas, 37. "Sure, the transition to the drachma will be difficult (but) average people will find a way to survive, many will probably go back to the village and start growing produce ... We just won't go back to the lifestyle we've led all this time."

Agapitos, the analyst, thinks that attitude is too cavalier.

"Desperate people do desperate things, but I can't predict what will happen," he said. "There will be rage and people will want to vent it but it may not be done in a civilized way."

The study?s authors focus on presenting the facts about military management styles, and stop short of drawing out the implications of their analysis. Yet their findings do raise some troubling possibilities about what it might take to keep rogue executives in check. Indoctrinating future business leaders to always follow the rules may ensure that laws don?t get broken but also prevent them from looking beyond the way things have always been done. And if creativity requires a bit of a roguish streak, it could mean that the occasional scam might be necessary collateral damage in an innovation-driven economy. After all, innovation and creativity can sometimes be hard to distinguish from the financial illusions created by persuasive conmen. Before Enron?s great unraveling, it was revered as a model of the future of the energy business and the subject of a glowing Harvard Business School case study now airbrushed from history. And great ideas sometimes require taking a leap of faith: When eBay?s first president, Jeff Skoll, explained the business model to one of his Stanford professors, the professor was certain Skoll would be looking for another job in a few months, as eBay was one of the stupidest business ideas he?d ever heard.

Why You Should Go RTW in Retirement | BootsnAll Travel Articles

Ask new retirees about their plans, and you will almost always hear, ?I want to travel.? But what does that mean? It could be an RV trip across the USA or a 2-week escorted tour through Europe. Or maybe even a trip around the world.

Why not? That?s what my husband and I did when we retired. We sold our house, our cars, most of our belongings, and left town to make a trip around the world.

After a lifetime of working, retirement should be the big payoff. An age of discovery when you have the opportunity to explore not just the world, but also your options for the next chapter in your story. Traveling the world opens up new possibilities for how to really savor the rest of your days.

Timing is Everything

Retirement brings with it major changes. For one thing, you have the time to do what you want. This is huge, and nothing can prepare you for the sense of freedom (or the sense of loss, depending on your point of view). Like everything in life, retirement is what you make it. You can make your retirement a beginning, not an end, and RTW travel is the perfect way to celebrate this new phase of your life. Make a clean break with your past life and have an adventure. There will never be a better time.

BootsnAll is your source for the best indie travel tips and inspiration. Are you indie?
Follow us on Facebook and Twitter and you won't miss a thing!
For us, it was as if we had been given a magic window of opportunity. We were able to retire early, we had our health, and our family was doing well, too. We felt like the planets were in alignment, and this was our time. I?d be lying if I said we weren?t scared.?Lots of people told us we were crazy. But our worst fear was that we would look back some day and think, ?Why didn?t we go when we had the chance??

Read 11 Reasons to Stop Dreaming and Start Planning Your RTW Trip and?Why It?s Not Crazy for Working Professionals to Quit Their Jobs to Travel the World

Chucking it All

Going homeless like we did is not for everyone, but it is an option to consider when you retire. You are probably thinking about selling the family home anyway. Why not sell now and decide where you want to live after your trip?

Before you dismiss the idea of selling your home as totally and utterly crazy, think for a moment of what it would be like. No mortgage to pay. No house to clean. No lawn to mow. No anticipating the next appliance failure. And no bills other than your credit cards. Pretty heady stuff, isn?t it? Plus, by banking the proceeds from the sale, you are ready to buy again whenever (and wherever) you want.

Thinking about a RTW trip for your retirement? Let us help.

Retirement is also an ideal time to get rid of things you no longer need and choose a leaner lifestyle. Of course, even we did not sell everything. We were fortunate enough to have a relative who gave us a bedroom and some space in the basement to store the personal items we could never part with. But we did jettison most of our possessions. And we had no regrets. When we finally bought another house, we furnished it totally differently from our previous home, and it was exhilarating to start with nothing ? like newlyweds all over again.

Retiring provides a great opportunity to clean out all that junk you have been hoarding?(you?ll probably be astounded by how much you?ve accumulated). What saddened me most was that so much of it had wasted its useful life sitting on a shelf. I could have sold (or given) that monstrous microwave to somebody years ago, and it would have been happily zapping meals rather than collecting dust in my basement. And what about all those books? Why did I insist on keeping books in a box in the attic when somebody else could have been enjoying a good read as I once did?

Selling our house and most of our possessions was not easy. In fact, at times, it was downright painful. But at one point, the pain was replaced by a sense of euphoria, a true feeling of liberation as we unfettered ourselves from the past.

How We Did It

We started our planning by opening up a World Atlas and creating a list of places we wanted to see. I used AirTreks to purchase our airfares and received good advice in the bargain (like making a stop in Dubai that was not in our original plan).

Here is our 8?-month itinerary in a nutshell:

Philadelphia ? Los Angeles ? Cook Islands ? Christchurch ? Overland to Auckland ? Sydney ? Ayers Rock ? Cairns ? Saipan ? Tokyo ? Hong Kong ? Singapore ? Dubai ? Athens ? 5 months roaming Europe ? Munich ? Philadelphia

Every RTW journey is intensely personal, and only you can decide what is right for you. Here are some key elements of ours:

  • Starting our trip in the Cook Islands offered an idyllic setting to transition from our old life to this new adventure. After all the excitement of leaving home, we needed this time to relax and prepare for what was to come.
  • Saipan may seem like an unusual choice, but it was a highlight of our trip, and a good example of how to make a RTW trip uniquely your own. One of my husband?s relatives had been killed in Saipan during WWII, and we wanted to find out the circumstances. I can?t tell you how moving it was to learn about Uncle Charlie?s critical role in winning the war in the Pacific and to see his name carved on the Saipan American Memorial.
  • The first part of our trip was well-planned, but once we arrived in Athens, we had no reservations and no return ticket ? what a sense of freedom! We never backpacked around Europe when we were young(er), so now we finally had our chance.
  • When you travel for this long, it?s a good idea to take an occasional ?vacation.? Our favorite relaxation spot was the incomparably tranquil Lake Bled in Slovenia?where we rented an apartment and lived like normal people (more or less) for two weeks.

After we returned from our trip, people would often ask, ?What surprised you the most?? I always answered without hesitation, ?How easy it was!?

Seeing the World Your Way

The beauty of being retired (or taking a long-term trip no matter your age) is that your time is your own. As my husband likes to say, ?Every day is a Saturday!? So when you plan your travels, take your time ? no need to rush. With more time in each location, you can adjust to the local rhythms and better absorb the nuances of the culture.

Travel is so much more than just seeing the sites. Travel opens your eyes to a world of options brimming with different ways of doing things. And with people whose life experiences are totally unlike your own. What is?the?greatest pleasure of travel? For us, it?s the personal interactions, the special moments of connection with other people, that will stay with us forever.

The slower you travel, the more people you will meet.

  • Like Noel, a Canadian teaching at a university in Qatar, who told us fascinating stories of life in that small Middle Eastern country ? including the fact that every newly married couple in Qatar receives $500,000 from the government to ?help them get started!?
  • And Walela, originally from Ethiopia, who won a visa to the United States in a national lottery, leaving behind a small house she shared with 16 other family members and a bedroom lined with mattresses.
  • Or gentle Lise, who explained how much the Queen of Denmark meant to her ? and taught us how to begin each day in her Copenhagen apartment with a generous shot of Schnapps!

Charting a New Course

One thing I learned when we traveled the world is that there are many ways to live a life. And you will probably return with new ideas about how you want to live yours. You may decide to move to a different part of the country or live in an apartment instead of a house. You may even fall in love with some foreign locale and decide to go the expat route, living permanently overseas (at least for awhile).

Hopefully, you will want to make travel an important part of your new life. My husband and I still take two major trips every year. In order to finance our travel lifestyle, we live in a small house, make do with one car, and reduce expenses wherever we can. This involves simple choices like eating in instead of out, hanging our clothes outside rather than using the dryer, giving our grandchildren fun times instead of fancy toys, and shopping at flea markets rather than the malls.

Once you have tackled the globe, anything is possible. You may discover a second career as a writer, photographer, or watercolor artist. You may want to go back to school to learn a new language, take an art appreciation course, or study history. Your story does not end when you retire ? in many ways, it is just beginning.

You only live once, but if you live right, once is enough.

Researchers power microbots made of bubbles with lasers

Image

They may not be "robots" as most have come to expect, but these so-called microrobots developed by a team of researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa do have at least one thing in common with many of their mechanical counterparts: lasers. As IEEE Spectrum reports, the bots themselves are actually nothing more than bubbles of air in a saline solution, but they become "microrobots" when the laser is added to the equation, which serves as an engine of sorts and allows the researchers to control both the speed and direction of the bubbles. That, they say, could allow the bots to be used for a variety of tasks, including assembling microstructures and then disappearing without a trace when the bubble is popped. Head on past the break for a video of what they're already capable of.

Play All Your Favorite PlayStation 3 Games in One Console

When you hear people say PlayStation, you primarily think of great games on a great game console. You think of Sony as the developer of a one-of-a-kind high quality game console and you also think of a gaming console that changed the way people think about home entertainment systems.

Today, one of the most enthusiastically awaited game consoles in the market is the PlayStation 3. This gaming console promises to yet again, revolutionize the way people play games on game consoles all over the world. With features that are considered as state-of-the-art and integrated technology that are highly advanced, people will really want one for their own home.

Aside from the sleek and attractive looking outer shell, PlayStation 3 packs one of the best technologies in the gaming console world. This particular gaming console is expected to be one of the greatest gaming consoles ever developed and released in the market.

PlayStation 3 has a powerful graphics chip together with a powerful 3.2 GHz CPU and 512 MB of RAM that will make you experience a one-of-a-kind game play. Another contribution for maximum enjoyment is the Blu-ray drive. The Blu-ray disc can handle data 5 times higher than your conventional DVD. This means that game developers will have more leverage in designing PlayStation 3 games and this will result in more realistic characters with detailed and also realistic environment.

Because of this, games will far more be realistic and detailed than ever before. In fact, Playing PlayStation 3 games on blu-ray discs will make you feel as if you are a part of the game itself and not just a person on the outside world playing with some game.

PlayStation 3 can definitely give you that extra spice you want in a game.

Another great contributor in PlayStation 3 is the game controllers. The game controllers for PlayStation 3 games are Bluetooth capable. This means that you can play PlayStation 3 games wirelessly. This will give you more freedom when playing with your PlayStation 3 games. For example, if you like football or soccer, you can literally run around your room like a football or soccer player who just scored a goal while holding your PlayStation 3 controller.

PlayStation 3 controllers are also integrated with the multi-axis motion sensing system technology that will allow you to control the game in real time and with maximum precision. With this system, the game controller will virtually become a natural extension of your body.

PlayStation 3 also has a backward compatibility feature. This feature will enable you to play with your old PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games in this console. This means that your investment in your old games will not be wasted. With PlayStation 3, you can play all your PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 games. In fact, because of the HDMI features of the PlayStation 3, it will even further enhance your old games.

Not only that, PlayStation 3 will enable you to play your DVD movies, and Audio CDs. PlayStation games aren?t the only discs that this game console can play. It is a game console that is also a DVD player and CD player.

So, investing in this game console is definitely not a wasted investment at all. So, watch out for it when it is released on November 2006 in Japan, United States, and Canada and on March 2007 in Europe and Australasia.

Egypt vote monitors say allowed to start work

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian authorities have finally allowed observers of this week's presidential election to start work, monitoring groups said on Tuesday, too late for them to draw a full picture of Egypt's first genuine leadership contest.

Fair, trouble-free voting on Wednesday and Thursday would help the winner establish his authority after 15 months of turbulent military rule since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak during a wave of Arab uprisings last year.

There have been few reports of the violence and intimidation by hired thugs that helped secure crushing election wins for Mubarak and his allies for decades, and Egyptians are looking forward to a vote whose outcome is not a foregone conclusion.

But the official start of campaigning early this month was marred by deadly clashes in Cairo between troops and opponents of army rule, and some presidential hopefuls were disqualified at the last minute, sparking protests.

Egyptians hope the vote will mark an end to the political turmoil and instability that dashed early expectations of a swift improvement in their lives after Mubarak's downfall.

Opinion polls, a largely untested exercise in Egypt, have varied widely but suggest the front-runners are two Mubarak-era figures - Amr Moussa and Ahmed Shafiq - and two Islamists - the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, who was ejected from the movement last year.

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy is a dark horse in the race with a growing following among young revolutionaries and workers.

A win for Shafiq, the last prime minister under Mubarak and like him a former air force commander, could spark a backlash by pro-democracy forces fearing a return to autocratic rule.

Mursi, with the backing of a formidable vote-winning machine that already secured the Brotherhood the most seats in parliament, says he can win outright in the first round.

If no candidate wins more than 50 percent in the first round, the top two vote-getters will fight a run-off in June. The army has pledged to hand power to the new president by July 1 and insists it is not siding with any candidate.

FRUSTRATING DELAYS

Many international monitors arrived in April but waited weeks for the necessary paperwork, forcing them to miss most of an election campaign enlivened by mass rallies, vigorous canvassing and Egypt's first televised presidential debates.

"We could not really assess the pre-electoral period as we did not have the accreditation," said Justin Doua, field director for the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), one of three foreign groups checking the vote.

Another, the Carter Center, said last week the delay in getting badges meant its monitors could not observe candidate and voter nominations or campaigning, which ended on Sunday.

The Center, founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter with a remit to promote peace, democracy and public health, said on Tuesday it had now received its monitoring badges.

But a network of Arab monitors named Maat - after an ancient Egyptian goddess who personified truth, morality and justice - said some of its staff had still not received theirs.

EISA has sent its 33 witnesses out to 15 provinces and they reported some minor disorder during electoral meetings but no major clashes between rival campaigns, Doua said.

The Carter Center has also complained of state election committee rules limiting the time monitors can spend in polling stations and barring them from commenting on the process until results are announced.

Fewer international groups will be monitoring the vote than during a parliamentary election, whose final stage in January was overshadowed by a judicial crackdown on several civil society groups accused of receiving illegal foreign funds.

The election committee has accredited 9,700 monitors from 54 foreign and local groups for the presidential election, said Hazem Mounir of the election unit at Egypt's National Council for Human Rights, far fewer than in the parliamentary vote.

Another local monitor group, the Egyptian Association for Community Participation Enhancement, said it would pull out because of the strictures imposed by the election committee.

"Foreign monitors will be false witnesses because they should have monitored the whole process starting from candidate applications," said a member of the association, Ahmed Fawzy.

"The election is not free because of political wrangling and the violence in the streets."

Mounir agreed it was wrong to restrict the activities of the monitors but said a boycott was not the solution.

"Who are you punishing when you boycott the monitoring?" he asked. "The state, or the people who want the assurance of guarantees for a fair vote?"

'Avengers' outguns 'Battleship' at box offices

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - New action movie "Battleship" collided with Iron Man, The Hulk and the rest of "The Avengers" this weekend at movie theater box offices, and the super heroes came out on top.

"Avengers" from Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios added an estimated $55.1 million to its U.S. and Canadian ticket sales and held the No. 1 box office spot for the third straight weekend, according to studio forecasts on Sunday.

The strong performance left big-budget "Battleship," which launched in theaters on Friday, drifting in second place with $25.3 million. Final figures will be released on Monday.

Since it opened overseas in late April, "Avengers" has dominated movie theater box offices worldwide. Global sales for the film that unites a squadron of Marvel super heroes in a battle against evil reached $1.18 billion through Sunday, making it the biggest Disney release ever, the studio said.

Steady interest in "The Avengers" likely took business from "Battleship," an effects-filled $209-million production inspired by a Hasbro board game. Ahead of the weekend, box office forecasters projected at least $30 million for "Battleship" in its North American (U.S. and Canadian) debut.

"We're disappointed obviously, there are a lot of factors going into this including the juggernaut 'Avengers' ... it's taking a big chunk out of the marketplace," Nikki Rocco, president of domestic distribution at Universal Pictures, told Reuters.

"As a studio, it's not a disaster but as a domestic opening, it's softer than we could have hoped for ... the (audience) attention span is unfortunately altered when you have a juggernaut like 'Avengers,'" Rocco added.

The movie stars Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard as Navy officers engaged in a battle at sea against alien invaders. The U.S. Navy provided ships and crew members for the film.

Universal Pictures released "Battleship" overseas weeks ago. International sales since the April 11 debut reached $226.8 million through Sunday, the studio said. Combined, global ticket sales for "Battleship" stand at $252.1 million.

In third place for the weekend, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's satire, "The Dictator," earned $17.4 million domestically over the weekend. The movie opened on Wednesday last week, and its five-day total came in at $24.4 million.

"We're ecstatic about that result. It's a fantastic start for us and we couldn't be more pleased ... for us to think we could beat 'Borat,' that was a pretty high goal ... hopefully we have a shot getting to 'Borat' numbers based on the opening," Anthony Marcoly, president of international distribution at Paramount, told Reuters.

OPPRESSIVE LEADER

In the film, the irreverent Cohen, whose first film "Borat, Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" earned $128 million during its run in U.S. and Canadian theaters, again plays for laughs in "The Dictator.

This time Cohen portrays an oppressive leader of a fictional north African country. The movie cost $65 million to produce and Baron Cohen has been capturing headlines with high profile publicity stunts in the United States, London, Germany and Cannes, ahead of the film's release.

Marcoly added that they will be pushing the film into Southern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia this summer, focusing on its comedic value in those markets, rather than Baron Cohen's star status.

"Dark Shadows," a horror comedy starring Johnny Depp, ended its second weekend in domestic theaters in fourth place, falling from the No. 2 spot last week. The movie pulled in $12.8 million, for a total of $50.9 million to date.

In fifth place, comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" took in $10.5 million. Based on a popular pregnancy advice book, the movie stars an ensemble cast including Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Chris Rock as soon-to-be parents.

Lions Gate, Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures produced the movie with a budget in the high $30 millions, reducing their risk with partnerships and foreign pre-sales.

Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Battleship." Lions Gate Entertainment Corp released "What to Expect." "Dark Shadows" was distributed by Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros studio. Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc, released "The Dictator."
