There's Something Incomplete About This Wireframe Desk [Wish You Were Here]

A lot of conceptual furniture designs only exist in a computer, and the rendered images we see are meant to make them look real. But it's just the opposite with Bomi Park's wireframe creations. They look like they only exist as pixels, but they are actual, physical metal grids. More »

Nexus Q social streaming device handson

What is the Q? Well, it's a ball... a ball that plays music. And videos. And it also lights up. It's what Google is calling it a "social streaming device" but what's most important is that this is finally the realization of the Android@Home standard that was unveiled last year. While the styling is what'll immediately grab you, it's the functionality that Google thinks will rock your living room. Join us after the break for our first impressions of this category-defying device.

(AP) ? Web game maker Zynga is trying to turn its digital playground into an even more entertaining place, working to prove wrong investors who doubt that it can build a long-lasting business.

Zynga unveiled features Tuesday that include a network designed to provide the more than 290 million players of its games with the same tools, whether they are competing on Facebook's online social network, a mobile device or the company's own website.

The network is called "Zynga With Friends." That's a reference to one of Zynga's most popular games, the Scrabble-inspired "Words With Friends."

Zynga Inc. also previewed several new games, including a food-themed title called "ChefVille" and a virtual house-building experience called "The Ville." Those are the latest riffs on a franchise that began with "FarmVille" three years ago.

"These games have become something like hobbies for millions of people," Zynga CEO Mark Pincus boasted to reporters who came to the company's San Francisco headquarters for Tuesday's presentation.

The addictive allure of Zynga's free games helped establish the company as one of past decade's brightest Internet stars. Just five years after Pincus founded the company and named it after his dog, Zynga has more than 290 million users worldwide and is expected to generate $1.4 billion in revenue this year.

But investors are worried Zynga is running out of new ideas as it girds for fiercer competition. The strategy laid out Tuesday evidently didn't provide much reassurance.

After edging up earlier in the session on hopes for bigger news, Zynga shares fell 30 cents, or nearly 5 percent, to close Tuesday at $5.77. That's well below the company's initial public offering price of $10 six months ago. The IPO raised $1 billion, enabling Zynga to buy its San Francisco headquarters for $234 million earlier this year to accommodate the growth envisioned by Pincus.

The concerns dogging Zynga include its ability to keep churning out popular games, increasing competition from more experienced entertainment companies such as Walt Disney Co. and Electronic Arts. Inc., and a shift toward playing games on smartphones that is expected to fragment that industry.

Zynga, which already attracts about 22 million daily users on mobile devices, has been trying to establish itself as a gaming hub and lessen its dependence on Facebook for traffic and revenue.

Toward that end, Zynga began in March hosting some of its games on its own website. The Zynga With Friends network is meant to ensure some of the features on Zynga.com also are available to players when they are on Facebook or mobile devices.

The network is also being opened to other game makers in an attempt to encourage players to come to Zynga.com more frequently. That could create more opportunities for Zynga to sell advertising to supplement the sales of virtual goods that make its games more engaging. Those items bring in most of Zynga's revenue. Just 3.5 million, or about 1 percent, of Zynga's users buy virtual goods, underscoring the challenges facing the company as it tries to convert more of its audience into paying customers.

Advertising accounts for just 9 percent of Zynga's revenue. As part of its efforts to boost that figure, Zynga last week began to publish ads from Facebook on its own website.

Zynga probably wouldn't have thrived if not for Facebook's social network, where posts about players' progress on various games have become a common sight ? much to the consternation of many Facebook fans.

Facebook accounts for 85 percent of Zynga's traffic and 92 percent of its revenue.

Even Pincus' personal fortune is intertwined with Facebook's.

As one of Facebook's early investors, Pincus still owns 4.3 million shares in the social network that is currently worth about $140 million.

Pincus, 46, owns a much larger Zynga stake that is currently worth about $545 million. He whittled his Zynga holdings by selling 16.5 million shares for nearly $200 million in April when the company's stock was worth twice as much as it is now.

Understanding Senior Care and Elder Law

Senior care and elder law are closely related industries that seek to provide care and protection for one of our most vulnerable populations -- senior citizens. But while distinctly different, senior care and elder law often intersect when it comes to the needs of our aging family members. Understanding what each is and how it can help your elder loved one can significantly improve the lifestyle of your entire family.

Senior care is a healthcare field dedicated to providing basic assistance and medical care for seniors. The field broadly refers to three primary types of care:

In Home Care -- The type of care that allows for the highest level of independence, in home care is provided by skilled professionals in the home of the elderly person. This can include full time, part time or relief care services.

Assisted Living -- Assisted living generally refers to a community designed, built and managed in such a way as to provide long term support to seniors. Members of assisted living communities often live in their own apartment or condominium and have access to a variety of senior care services.

Nursing Care -- Nursing care is the most intensive level of care and offers full medical services including medication management. Nursing care residents live in a specialized facility staffed by nurses and their aides, and in some cases psychiatrists and medical doctors are part of the regular staff.

Elder law is a relatively new field of law that deals exclusively with legal issues related to senior citizens. This includes estate planning, wills and trusts, laws dealing with insurance and medical care, and laws that protect the elderly from neglect or abuse.

Senior care and elder law intersect in the following 2 ways:

1.) Life Decisions

There are complicated laws surrounding legal issues like wills, long term care and estate planning. These laws require legal counsel even in the most ideal situations, but what often happens is that families begin asking about these laws only after a crisis has occurred.

For instance, in the case of an elderly family member suddenly taking ill and being unable to make their own rational decisions, legal intervention is often required in order for long term care to proceed. And in cases of dementia where family members want to provide care at home; there are legal responsibilities that must be undertaken when doing so.

The best solution to these problems is to create a plan before crisis occurs.

2.) Protection from Abuse

It's unfortunate that we would need them, but there are laws in place that protect seniors from neglect or abuse. In many cases the punishment for violating these laws are severe and come with hefty prison sentences. Family members that suspect their loved ones are being mistreated can take action by invoking elder law. Authorities are required to rigorously investigate any such claims.

Senior care is ultimately governed by elder law, so developing an understanding of the two is critical to providing a lifetime of support for an elderly family member. To learn more, call a professional in home care giver or senior care provider for an immediate consultation.

Seeking elusive 'alpha,' investors scour the globe

(AP) ? You can leap off a mountainside in extreme skiing, kick and claw to near death in extreme fighting and twist yourself into a pretzel in extreme yoga. Why not turn investing into an adventure sport?

Professional money managers are scouring the world for oddball assets, desperate to find anything that moves to its own beat rather than rising and falling with everything else in the financial markets.

They are putting money into racehorses, stakes in lawsuits, old coins, even the copyrights to old pop songs. One fund manager bought stock in a beer company called Bralirwa in Rwanda, where tribal rivalry led to a genocide that left 800,000 people dead in 1994.

"Rwanda triggers a lot of bad memories, so people don't even think of investing there, but there's huge opportunity," says Lawrence Speidell of Frontier Market Select Fund, which also owns stock in an Iraqi soft drink bottler and a Palestinian telephone company.

Bralirwa stock has risen 150 percent since Speidell bought it early last year. But the real appeal is that it did so in a steady, calm way, disregarding events that have made the rest of the world's stock markets bumpy and frightening, like the Japanese tsunami and European debt troubles.

And Bralirwa keeps bucking the headlines. Last month, while stocks in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America fell because of fear that Greece would leave the euro and Spain needed a bailout, Bralirwa rose 6.5 percent. Even Apple, a stock known to shrug off scary headlines itself, got swept along in the downdraft.

In trading jargon, the Rwandan company and some of Speidell's other exotic holdings are "uncorrelated." They have a tendency to move to their own rhythm, a sort of Holy Grail in investing.

Discover enough of these assets and a money manager might claim to have achieved "alpha," an ability to beat the Standard & Poor's 500 or other indexes without taking on more risk.

Convincing investors of the claim is another matter. For years, ordinary investors trusted their fund managers, paying them tens of billions of dollars in annual fees. But they've grown skeptical. They've pulled more than $400 billion from U.S. stock mutual funds since 2008.

Not only did the managers fail to protect against losses in the financial crisis that year, but too much of what they've bought since seems to ride up and down with the stock indexes.

Not lawsuits, though. In exchange for a cut of the winnings, funds have sprung up to help pay for suits brought by wives in divorce court, by 9/11 cleanup crews against New York City for health problems and, in one case, by two foreign businessmen in a two-decade dispute with the republic of Georgia for reneging on a gas-pipeline deal.

"It gives David a chance against Goliath," says Sean Coffey, co-founder of BlackRobe Capital Partners, a lawsuit-financing company started last year. And, he adds, "It doesn't matter what happens in Greece."

It can prove just as risky. In lawsuit investing, a fund gets something akin to a share of one side of the dispute. If that side loses in court, the investors are out their money. If that side wins, the investors get their money back with profit.

Sometimes big profit. In one celebrated case, Burford Group, a lawsuit lender, contributed $4 million in November 2010 to help Indians from the Ecuadorean rain forest pay for a pollution suit against Chevron.

A few months later, an Ecuadorean judge ordered the oil company to pay $18 billion. Chevron appealed and lost, but is suing lawyers and consultants from the other side for fraud. Burford appeared in position to collect big profits ? or rather could have if it hadn't traded much of its stake in the outcome to an undisclosed firm.

Yes, you can trade lawsuit stakes like stocks.

For years, professional investors in pursuit of alpha poured money into developing countries, stocks of small companies, commodities and funds buying pricey art or wine. Success has been rare, which has only driven the pros to venture deeper, farther.

Once upon a time, putting money into Brazilian, Russian, Indian and Chinese stocks was considered the kind of extreme investing that could protect investors. Even if U.S. stocks fell, the so-called BRIC markets would rise as the middle classes of these countries grew.

Or so the thinking went. Then came the U.S. financial crisis, and investors discovered foreign markets had too many trade and financial ties with the U.S. to offer much help. In fact, they can make things worse. U.S. stocks fell 37 percent in 2008, but each of the BRICs fell more.

Since then, those markets have broken the link with the U.S. only occasionally, though not always in a good way. Stocks in each of these emerging economies fell 20 percent or more last year while the S&P 500 gained 2.1 percent, if you count dividends.

Another popular diversification move, buying commodities, used to work. When stock prices were falling, it was often because commodity prices were rising. Buying commodities at the right time handed investors big profits.

But in a United Nations report in March, two economists tracking commodity prices over 16 years found they increasingly move up and down with U.S. stocks, instead of in opposite directions as in the past. In May, the S&P 500 fell 6 percent and commodities lost 9 percent.

For the lockstep moves, blame the so-called wisdom of the crowd. No sooner does an investor discover a far-off place or obscure asset moving to its own rhythm than everyone else seems to show up with fistfuls of dollars.

The U.N. report on commodities, for instance, notes that investors, including many betting with 401(k) plans, had $450 billion in commodity funds last year, up from less than $10 billion in 2000. That makes prices more likely to gyrate up and down with greed and fear surging across the globe in reaction to news, the same as stocks.

If you're rich enough, you can always turn to the folks who claim to have more alpha than anyone else, the managers of hedge funds. The appeal of these exclusive investing vehicles is that they can bet markets will fall as well as rise, and often use borrowed money to do so, which provides leverage. For access to their alleged prowess, managers charge you $2 for every $100 invested each year, and take a fifth of annual profits, if there are any.

There weren't many last year. The average hedge fund lost more than 5 percent, according to fund tracker Hedge Fund Research. Curiously, the dismal showing hasn't slowed demand for the funds. They now number nearly 7,600, back almost to their peak at the start of 2008.

During the meltdown that year, one scholar of investing, a former editor of the Financial Analysts Journal, dared to state the obvious in a short article with a blockbuster title: "The Uncorrelated Return Myth."

It's not clear things have improved much. Exotic fare like rare coins and fine wine funds have mostly risen in recent years, but so have stocks, making you wonder whether they'll fall together, too.

Avarae Global, a rare-coin fund that lost half its value in 2008, is up 27.7 percent in two years, a near carbon copy of the 26.7 percent rise for the S&P 500. The Vintage Wine Fund appears to be moving on its own more, but that isn't necessarily good. It dropped 22 percent last year.

Better to stick with the song "Guantanamera," which has managed to buck even the worst of times.

"2008 was actually our best year," says Brett Hellerman, CEO of Wood Creek Capital Management, a hedge fund that owns the copyright to 30,000 songs, including the Cuban standard, and claims double-digit annual returns. When someone downloads "Guantanamera," Wood Creek pockets as much as 9.1 cents.

Not adventurous enough? You can always bet on Madoff money. Some hedge funds are paying victims of the Ponzi scheme pennies on the dollar for their official claims on a hunch they will bring big profits later when the bankruptcy court divvies up recovered money. Or you can play the ponies. A firm registered in Malta is trying to drum up interest in a new fund, called Resco Thoroughbred, that would race them for prize money and sell them.

Those looking for extreme investing on the cheap may want to check out exchange-traded funds, which typically charge half what mutual funds do and, unlike them, can be traded all day like stocks.

ETFs are exploding in number and variety. Bullish on China, but only on the small companies? Think stocks in Kazakhstan are about to soar? Or the Polish currency, the zloty? There are ETFs for that.

Or you can skip it all and bet on the only thing that's near-certain: That Wall Street will continue to sell the promise of high returns divorced from the U.S. stock market, and people will continue to pay for the effort.

Since its October low, the PowerShares Dynamic Financial Sector ETF, which holds stocks of U.S. banks and investment firms, is up 25 percent.

Oops, I?m dead: what to do if Facebook thinks you?re popping up daisies

It might be a little disconcerting, to say the least, to log into your Facebook account and find that Facebook thinks you are dead. That is, unfortunately, exactly what happened to Facebook user?Brett Millet, who?posted about the problem?on the question-and-answer site?StackExchange.

Evidently someone ? and it would have to be one of his Facebook friends ? reported him as deceased, using?this Facebook form:

While it may seem like a funny prank to some, reporting a Facebook user deceased is actually a fairly horrific thing to do. Imagine the shock of your friends checking you out on Facebook and seeing, to their horror, that you are presumably dead. Or, God forbid, your mother or another close relative.

You would think that Facebook would do some level of due diligence before taking such a drastic step, but that allegedly did not happen, at least in Millet?s case:

?Apparently, it?s pretty easy to memorialize someone?s Facebook profile,? he posted. ?I am greeted with the following message?after?entering my?valid?and?correct?username and password:?

Account Inaccessible

This account is in a special memorial state. If you have any questions or concerns, please visit the Help Center for further information.

I find it hard to believe that there are no safeguards in place to prevent this from happening.?The simplest, of course, would be an email or a text to the affected person, checking for a response. Another option would be simply waiting for a time to see if the person logs in and posts anything. Additionally, Facebook could simply, upon the seemingly dead user?s next login, request clarification.

If this story is accurate ? VentureBeat is making inquiries right now with both Facebook PR and the affected user ? Millet seems to have regained access to his account.

One recommended process in the StackExchange thread was to?report a violation of Facebook terms, which enables users who cannot access their accounts to log in again.

However, it appears that Facebook has a special page already set up for users who find themselves in precisely this situation, and that?s the other advice given in the discussion thread. This is the page here:?My Personal Account is in a Special Memorialized State.

The fact that Facebook has a page set up for specifically this purpose would seem to indicate that Millet is not alone in his predicament: this unfortunate situation has happened before, and often enough to require its own page at Facebook. Here, users can prove that they are not, in fact, dead, and regain access to their account.

As mentioned above, VentureBeat is reaching out to both Millet and Facebook and will update this story as we receive more details.

Taking The Sting Out Of Budgeting | Debt Consolidation - Get Debt ...

Couple discussing budgetingI understand that budgeting isn?t any fun. It?s more fun to just spend what you want to spend when you want to spend it. See those cool, new polarized sunglasses? Heck, they?re just $25. Why not just buy them?

On the other hand, making and sticking to a budget is hard work. You have to first figure out where all your money is going and then what you can reduce or eliminate.

Use a free budgeting template

There is one way to make budgeting easier?if you have a computer?and that is to get a use a budgeting template. For example, the company LearnVest offers a free budgeting template you can access online. The company says it makes ?budgeting as easy as spending.? While I might be a bit skeptical about this claim, it does appear that using a template such as this would be much easier than creating a budget spreadsheet yourself. The one downside to this kind of online template is that it is online?meaning that you have to provide the company with all your information and then hope it keeps it safe and secure.

Managing your money worksheets

The website SmartAboutMoney.org also offers a free tool called Managing Your Money (Worksheets) it says that, ?will help you determine and manage your debt, major expenses and family income.? Its worksheets begin with an area where you fill in all your sources of income, followed by areas where you list your debts, when your bills are due, your occasional big expenses, a spending plan for fixed expenses, a spending plan for controllable expenses, and so forth. Once you finish these worksheets you should have a complete and accurate picture of your spending, which is the first step in bringing it under control. I thought the Summary sheet was interesting because it has a space for ?Amount Left.? If you?re like us, there won?t be an amount left. In fact, you may like many families ? spending more than you earn.

Microsoft can help

The Microsoft Office? website offers a free Personal Budget Worksheet that you can download and use in conjunction with Microsoft Excel? ? assuming you own Excel. This could be a better solution than the LearnVest budgeting template because you would always have the information at your fingertips and on your computer.

What makes these templates really useful

What makes these templates very useful is the fact that they provide you with a list of all possible expenses. My experience is that it?s very difficult to just sit and try to remember all the things that you spend money on. While you would probably remember the big stuff?your house payment or rent, auto insurance, utilities, etc.?you might not be so good about remembering the small stuff such as household repairs, hair care, cosmetics, dry cleaning, movies, parking and the like. You won?t have to worry about this if you use a budgeting template because it will have all of these categories and more. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.

Scientists who went to war

08:00 22 June 2012

Like necessity, war breeds invention, so it is not surprising that many great scientists and engineers have made significant contributions to warfare

Image 1 of 8

Painting, sculpture and architecture were not the only things flourishing in Renaissance Italy. Warring city states made it a hotbed for the art of war, too, and Leonardo da Vinci applied his creative talents to designing war machines for his patron, the duke of Milan. Very few of his military inventions were ever realised in his lifetime, but they included a giant crossbow and a scythed chariot, as well as precursors to the tank and the machine gun. Here is a scale model of his multi-gun war machine.

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Cast Share Slo-Mo Acting Tips

'Be willing to look stupid,' Anthony Mackie, who plays Lincoln's best friend in the film, warns.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Benjamin Walker in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"
Photo:

Working with a director like Timur Bekmambetov guarantees a few things. You'll probably take part in some insane action sequences. And there will definitely be slow-motion.

When MTV News sat down with Benjamin Walker and Anthony Mackie, from Bekmambetov's latest film, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," they shared some helpful hints about how to properly act in super-slo-mo.

"Don't think about it," Walker said right off the bat. He probably had the most to do at the slow speed as our 16th president and first commander in vampire slaying, Abraham Lincoln.

But it's never that simple, as Mackie was able to attest. "Be willing to look stupid," he warned.

The final sequence of the film finds Abe and his best friend, Will Johnson (Mackie), atop a locomotive, riding along a burning bridge. It required a lot of slow-motion running and jumping. Mackie couldn't help but exaggerate his movement as he leapt from car to car.

"There's that whole sequence where we're jumping from one car to the other when the bridge is burning up, and I literally couldn't stop doing the 'swim' move when I was jumping. So Timur was like, 'Don't do the swim move,' and I was like, 'Sh--,' " he said. "So we're on the train, and he's like, 'Don't think about it,' and I'm like, 'All right, all right, all right.' Action, jump, swim. In order not to do the swim move, I do a shot-put move. Needless to say, I'm glad it looked all right in the movie, because I thought I was going to look like an idiot."

Similarly, during something as simple as a ballroom-dancing scene, Walker couldn't help act out the slo-mo. "When we were shooting the ballroom scene, it was in slow motion," he said. "I knew it in my mind, so I start kind of slowing down. He goes, 'No, stop. We'll slow it down later.' "

But if it came down to it, Mackie had one big piece of advice. "It's all about your face," he said. "They always say, 'Be careful about your face.' "

Check out everything we've got on "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."

Stocks rebound from prior day?s sell-off

How should investors play the dismal economic numbers in the U.S., Europe and China? Russ Koesterich, BlackRock's iShares Group global chief investment strategist, weighs in on how to trade Thursday's sell-off.

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks rebounded Friday from the second-worst decline of the year.

The broader market dropped 2.2 percent in the prior session, its biggest drop since a 2.5 percent fall on June 1, as evidence mounted of slowing manufacturing growth worldwide, a threat to corporate profits.

"Definitely a bounce here although it is simply a reaction to how sharp the selloff was yesterday," said Tim Ghriskey, Chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in Bedford Hills, New York.

Stock futures briefly pared gains on Friday after U.S. central bank official Jeffrey Lacker, an inflation hawk, said the latest monetary stimulus, an extension of its "Operation Twist," risks higher inflation and will not do much to boost a weakening U.S. economy.

"The market expected something out of the Fed and the Fed didn't want to totally disappoint - while Twist might not do a lot, it certainly does have an impact," said Ghriskey.

Markets are expected to see a volume spike at the close, just before Russell Investments sets the final rebalance of its indexes, in which $3.9 trillion in assets are benchmarked to globally.

After falling for two consecutive sessions, the S&P 500 index is down 1.3 percent for the week, but remains on track for its first monthly gain in three months.

Investors will eye banking shares after ratings agency Moody's downgraded 15 of the world's biggest banks on Thursday, lowering credit ratings by one to three notches to reflect their risk of losses from volatile capital market activities.

Morgan Stanley added 2.4 percent to $14.29 and Bank of America Corp rose 1.6 percent to $7.95 in premarket trade, as many of the ratings cuts weren't as deep as expected.

European shares extended the previous session's losses triggered by poor macroeconomic data. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares fell 0.4 percent.

The leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Spain will try to find common ground in Rome to restore confidence in the euro zone ahead of a full EU summit next week, which Italy's prime minister called a defining moment.

Darden Restaurants Inc dipped 2.3 percent to $49.25 in premarket trade after the restaurant operator reported fourth-quarter earnings. The company expected its business environment in 2013 "to be similar to 2012, with slow and uneven recovery in economy and industry.

Ryder Systems Inc slumped 9.8 percent to $36.75 in premarket after the logistics company cut its quarterly earnings forecast, amid lower demand for its commercial rental services.

Monster Beverage Corp added 2.9 percent to $76.93 in light premarket trade after S&P said the company will replace Sara Lee Corp in the S&P 500 after the close of trading on June 28. Sara Lee is spinning off its international Coffee & Tea business.

Windows Phone 8 gets a strong gaming push, and native DirectX ...

Windows Phone 8 is getting a major gaming push. At today?s Microsoft?s Windows Phone Summit, Microsoft announced the new mobile platform will offer native code development in C/C++ with DirectX to allow for ?killer games.?

According to Microsoft, this will make it much easier for game developers to port their titles to the platform from iOS and Android while still maintaining much of their code ? thus making it more enticing for developers to release content on the Windows Phone 8 platform. Also, DirectX architecture means easy porting of games from Windows 8 desktop so ?games developers can write the same game for Windows 8 and Windows Phone,? a company rep said at the summit.

Windows Phone 8 will also offer support for more heavy-duty hardware, shared drivers with Windows 8 graphics and media components, and more gaming-friendly features.

In addition to today?s announcements about native coding in C/C++, devs can also mix-and-match with HTML5 and C#/Visual Basic, depending on the features their games and apps will need.

One major partner for today?s launch is gaming megalith Zynga. The launch will also be supported by such parties as Autodesk, Havok, Big Fish, and Gameloft.

Games for Windows Phone 8-powered devices can be developed using the full Havok Technology Suite, which will allow for ?immersive and real 3D worlds, highly realistic characters and cinematic visuals,? said Havok?s Andrew Bowell onstage today.

Currently, no phones have been released that will run Windows Phone 8; stay tuned for more hardware news in the fall.

Yesterday, the company announced the Surface, a tablet that also runs on Windows 8. No doubt there will be a degree of cross-compatibility on that front as well.
