Lawyer: Former ricin suspect's home is unlivable

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) ? A Mississippi man's house is uninhabitable after investigators searched it but failed to find evidence of the deadly poison ricin, a lawyer said Monday, arguing that the government should repair the home.

Kevin Curtis was once charged in the mailing of poisoned letters to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and a Mississippi judge, but the charges were later dropped. The investigation shifted last week to another man who had a falling out with Curtis, and that suspect appeared in court Monday on a charge of making ricin.

Curtis' lawyer, Christi McCoy, has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney Felicia Adams demanding that Curtis be provided temporary housing and the government repair his Corinth, Miss., home and possessions. She also wants the government to pay his legal bills.

"To be specific, Mr. Curtis' home is uninhabitable. I have seen a lot of post search residences but this one is quite disturbing. The agents removed art from the walls, broke the frames and tore the artwork. Mr. Curtis offered his keys but agents chose to break the lock. Mr. Curtis' garbage was scheduled to be picked up Thursday, the day after he was snatched from his life. A week later, the garbage remains in his home, along with millions of insects it attracted," the letter says.

Though attorneys for Curtis say their client was framed, McCoy believes whoever sent the letters had a primary goal of targeting the public officials. Curtis has said that he feuded with the man now charged in the case, James Everett Dutschke.

"I think Kevin was just an afterthought or a scapegoat," McCoy said.

Some of the language in the letters was similar to posts on Curtis' Facebook page and they were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message." Curtis often used a similar online signoff.

Had damaging Curtis been the point of the scheme, McCoy said she believes that whoever set up her client could have done a better job of implicating him, such as planting evidence at his home.

McCoy said in an interview Monday that she still believes the FBI acted on the best information available at the time, but it's time to make her client whole. The letter said Curtis' life was "ruined."

Curtis, a 45-year-old Elvis impersonator, was arrested on April 17. The charges were dropped six days later and Curtis was released from jail.

A message left seeking comment about McCoy's letter at the federal prosecutor's office in Oxford wasn't immediately returned.

After Curtis was released, the focus turned to Dutschke. In court Monday, a judge ordered that Dutschke be held without bond until a preliminary and detention hearing on Thursday. More details are likely to emerge at that hearing, when prosecutors have to show they have enough evidence to hold him.

Dutschke made a brief appearance wearing an orange jumpsuit with his hands shackled. The 41-year-old suspect said little during his hearing other than answering affirmatively to the judge's questions about whether he understood the charges against him.

Dutschke (pronounced DUHS'-kee) has denied involvement in the mailing of the letters, saying he's a patriot with no grudges against anyone. He has previously run for political office and was known to frequent political rallies in northern Mississippi.

An attorney from the public defender's office appointed to represent Dutschke declined to comment after Monday's hearing. Another attorney of Dutschke's, Lori Nail Basham, said she will continue to represent him in other matters but not the federal case.

Dutschke's house, business and vehicles in Tupelo, Miss., were searched last week, often by crews in hazardous materials suits, and he had been under surveillance.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted. A news release from federal authorities said Dutschke was charged with "knowingly developing, producing, stockpiling, transferring, acquiring, retaining and possessing a biological agent, toxin and delivery system, for use as a weapon, to wit: ricin."

He already had legal problems. Earlier this month, he pleaded not guilty in state court to two child molestation charges involving three girls younger than 16, at least one of whom was a student at his martial arts studio. He also was appealing a conviction on a different charge of indecent exposure. He told The Associated Press last week that his lawyer told him not to comment on those cases.

Earlier in the week, as investigators searched his primary residence in Tupelo, Dutschke told the AP, "I don't know how much more of this I can take."

"I'm a patriotic American. I don't have any grudges against anybody. ... I did not send the letters," Dutschke said.

Dutschke and Curtis were acquainted. Curtis said they had talked about possibly publishing a book on a conspiracy that Curtis says he uncovered about the black-market sale of body parts. But he said they later had a feud.

Curtis's attorney Hal Neilson said the legal team gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis and Dutschke's came up.

The Mississippi judge who received one of the letters, Sadie Holland, is part of a family that has had political skirmishes with Dutschke. Her son, Steve Holland, a Democratic state representative, said his mother encountered Dutschke at a rally in the town of Verona in 2007, when Dutschke ran as a Republican against Steve Holland.

Holland said his mother confronted Dutschke after he made a derogatory speech about the Holland family. She demanded that he apologize, which Holland says he did.

Dutschke's MySpace page has several pictures with him and Wicker, though he's never worked for Wicker's campaign. Republicans in north Mississippi say Dutschke used to frequently show up at GOP events and mingle with people, usually finding a way to get a snapshot of himself with the headliner.

"He would always hand his camera to somebody to get his picture made," longtime Republican Mike Armour of Tupelo said by phone Monday.

A woman described by a neighbor as Dutschke's wife arrived at their home Monday afternoon but covered her face and did not respond to a reporter as she walked from a green minivan into the house.

Rory Key lives just down the street from Dutschke's house. He said Dutschke came to his house while the FBI was searchingthe suspect's home asking for a drink and a snack.

He said the suspect was more upset than nervous. Key said he doesn't believe Dutscke committed the crime. He also said he didn't know him that well because Dustchke kept to himself.

Colbert Busch, Sanford exchange verbal jabs in debate

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, trying to resurrect a political career, and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch traded verbal jabs during spirited exchanges Monday night in their only scheduled debate in the race for the state's vacant 1st Congressional District seat.

With eight days to go before the May 7 special election, Sanford stressed his efforts to rein in spending as a three-term member of Congress and as a two-term governor. The Republican noted that he was the first governor in the nation to turn back economic stimulus funds.

But Colbert Busch reminded Sanford that he one used taxpayer funds to "leave the country for a personal purpose" ? referring to the extramarital affair with an Argentine woman he had while governor. Sanford remarked that he didn't hear the response and asked to have the question repeated.

"Answer the question," Colbert Busch chimed in.

Sanford wasn't biting.

Colbert Busch, saying she would use her years of business experience including her work in the steam industry, criticized Sanford for voting in Congress against harbor dredging and building a higher bridge so the Port of Charleston could handle a new generation of larger container ships.

"My opponent voted against the dredging and voted against the bridge," said Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert.

Sanford shot back that, if it bothered her so much before "I don't think you would have written me a $500 check as I left the Congress to run for governor. I don't think it must have bothered her that much." He said he opposed the money coming in the form of earmarks.

"I was against earmarks before being against earmarks was cool," he said.

The Democrat responded that Sanford had years ago told her he supported trade and dredging.

"You didn't tell the truth," she told Sanford. "You turned around and did the opposite."

Colbert Busch also said that, if elected, she would return 10 percent of her congressional salary to the government.

The candidates also differed over issues such as immigration reform, the federal health care overhaul and abortion during the debate sponsored by the Patch news service, the South Carolina Radio Network, Charleston television station WCBD and which was telecast by C-SPAN.

Sanford tried to tie Colbert Busch to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and labor unions. She said she was independent and planned to represent the district's voters, first and foremost. The debate, attended by 500 people, was frequently interrupted by applause and shouts from the audience.

"We're at an incredible tipping point as a civilization and I think if we don't get spending right in Washington, D.C., there will be real consequences," Sanford said. "I've gotten into this race with the hope of taking what I've learned in Congress, what I learned in the governorship and what I've learned on the way up and on the way down and applying it to what I believe is the great debate of our civilization, which is indeed, how do we get our financial house in order."

Colbert Busch portrayed things differently.

"Here's the fundamental difference. This is not the end of our time as we know it," she said. "The sky is not falling Henny Penny. In fact our best days are ahead of us."

The debate was their first joint appearance in the campaign that began after then-U.S. Rep. Tim Scott was appointed to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by fellow Republican Jim DeMint.

Sanford and Colbert Busch won their respective party primaries ? Sanford after a GOP runoff. They are now vying along with Green Party Candidate Eugene Platt in the May 7 special election in the district.

The latest finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show Colbert Busch has raised more money than Sanford ? about $1.2 million to about $790,000. But money from his old campaign accounts left Sanford with about the same amount as Colbert Busch for the campaign. Stephen Colbert has appeared at several fundraisers for his older sister.

Sanford held the congressional seat for three terms in the 1990s.

Colbert Busch is currently on leave from her job as director of business development for Clemson University's Wind Turbine Drive Testing Facility in North Charleston.

Fire erupts at Israeli prison holding ex-president

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A fire erupted Sunday at the prison where former Israeli President Moshe Katsav is serving time, but he was not among the 11 people who suffered light injuries, authorities said.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said seven jailers, a prisoner and three firefighters suffered smoke inhalation, but the ex-president was not hurt.

Itsik Gorlov, a spokesman for the prisons service, said the blaze broke out at a factory at Maasiyahu prison in central Israel. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

Katsav was Israel's president from 2000 to 2007. He has been serving a seven-year sentence since 2011 after being convicted of rape and other charges, though he has repeatedly professed his innocence.

Israel on Sunday was battling a series of brushfires caused by the combination of hot, dry weather and the Lag Baomer holiday, in which revelers traditionally celebrate with bonfires.

UFC 159 was clearly cursed by demons (Video)

"It was a very weird night."

UFC president Dana White started the post-UFC 159 press conference with these words. The event featured a nasty broken thumb on Yancy Medeiros, and equally nasty broken toe on Jon Jones, two fight stoppages because of eyepokes, and one fight that was canceled hours before it was supposed to happen.

But the craziest part of all? The demonic voice that was heard between rounds of Michael Bisping's win over Alan Belcher.

Did the gates of hell open before the fight, and did Satan send his minions to New Jersey? Were Bisping's cornermen, who were bathed in creepy red light, actually demons? Middle Easy thinks it was a spell from "Passages of the Dead."

It's possible the UFC ticked off the wrong person and got the evil eye thrown its way. The bigger question: Are we all cursed for watching the bouts?

The 25th of April was the second day of the Gothenburg International Science Festival 2013, where in the public arena of Nordstan in Gothenburg, a lively presentation on the topic of transportation for the future was ongoing by Per-Olof Arn?s of Chalmers University of Technology in the morning. Colleagues from the University of Gothenburg would also be giving some presentations through the day, regarding the various aspects of the crisis in Europe and how that might have rippling effects on issues such as European state leadership and workforce migrations between countries in Europe.

This year?s theme at the science festival is Cruise and Control. In a multi-dimensional and multi-levelled approach, the event aims to address questions pertaining to the Individual such as personal health and fitness, to security controls by use (or abuse) of technology in Society, to larger Environmental issues such as finding balance between consumption and sustainable living.

The festival has about 30 host venues across the city of Gothenburg, from university lecture halls to public arenas. Many activities are about raising consciousness towards the a higher level We, that both encompasses the Individual, while at the same time, looking at issues beyond the Individual to encompass larger social groups.

Nordstan.

Cruise or Control in action ? all eyes and mobile phones locked on target of interest.

This exhibit comes from the Non-Violence Project Foundation. It aims to inspire and engage one hundred million youths in understanding peaceful conflict resolution.

Very Louboutin. The original is the sculpture Non-Violence by Carl Fredrik Reutersw?rd of which one copy sits outside the city library of Gothenburg and one outside the UN Building in New York. The inspiration came from the murder of John Lennon.

The science festival is currently running from 25 to 28 April, which leaves a weekend of knowledge to explore.

It is the largest festival of knowledge in Sweden and one of the most popular science events in Europe, where the academic and scientific circles get a chance to present their research work in building blocks format as it were, to high school and junior college students.

All in all, more than 350 cross-disciplinary lectures, seminars and workshops will be conducted, giving those interested to attend a buffet of activities from which to pick their favourites.

Analysis: In force-feeding detainees, Obama has courts on his side

By David Ingram and Jane Sutton

WASHINGTON/MIAMI (Reuters) - As detainees at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, press ahead with a widening hunger strike nearly three months old, President Barack Obama has come under increasing criticism for his policy of force-feeding them.

But U.S. law is on his side, an analysis of court rulings shows.

Most U.S. judges who have examined forced feeding in prisons have concluded that the measure may violate the rights of inmates to control their own bodies and to privacy - rights rooted in the U.S. Constitution and in common law. But they have found that the needs of operating a prison are more important.

Courts generally view a prison hunger strike as a suicide attempt, and they have ruled wardens have authority to stop suicide attempts as part of their mandate to preserve order.

"If prisoners were allowed to kill themselves, prisons would find it even more difficult than they do to maintain discipline, because of the effect of a suicide in agitating the other prisoners," Judge Richard Posner wrote for a Chicago-based appeals court in 2006 in a case involving a Wisconsin prison that punished a disobedient inmate by refusing him food.

As of Thursday, 94 of the 166 prisoners were on a hunger strike in Guantanamo, meaning they had refused at least nine consecutive meals. According to a military count, 17 had lost enough weight to be force-fed liquid meals through a nasogastric tube, and three were in the hospital for observation.

Army Lieutenant Colonel Samuel House, a spokesman for the detention camp, said none of the detainees in the hospital had a life-threatening condition.

Striking inmates began refusing to eat around early February, alleging rough handling of the Koran during searches for contraband and protesting their prolonged imprisonment. General John Kelly, head of U.S. military forces in Latin America, said assertions about the Koran were untrue.

OPPOSITION VOICED

A New York Times opinion piece last week by Samir Naji al Hasan Moqbel, a Yemeni man detained at Guantanamo since 2002, launched debate over the forced feedings. Like others there, he was captured abroad on suspicion of supporting terrorism.

"I will never forget the first time they passed the feeding tube up my nose. I can't describe how painful it is to be force-fed this way," Moqbel said in the op-ed dictated through an interpreter to his lawyers.

As described by Guantanamo officials, a feeding tube is lubricated and inserted through the nose down to the stomach for the two hours it takes liquid food to pass through. In general, hunger strikers continue to drink water.

Human rights advocates and many doctors decry forced feeding of hunger strikers as a violation of personal liberty and medical ethics with risks of medical complications such as discomfort, bleeding, nausea and throat sores. The 65-year-old World Medical Association, made up of 100 national medical associations, has said it is unethical and never justified to force-feed a mentally competent adult.

Carlos Warner, a federal public defender who represents 11 Guantanamo detainees, including Kuwaiti hunger striker Faiz al Kandari, said detainee lawyers are split on the issue.

Some "have a clear position that the government should not be force-feeding," and have unsuccessfully made their argument in federal court in Washington, D.C., Warner said. "Other lawyers are of the opinion that their clients should not die of hunger before we have a chance to free them."

The Constitution Project, a U.S. legal group that includes Democrats and Republicans, said last week that forced feeding at Guantanamo "is a form of abuse and must end."

George Annas, a Boston University professor of health law who opposes the forced feeding of hunger strikers on medical ethics grounds, said U.S. law is "very permissive" of the practice. He described the attitude of American prisons as: "Do we care about indignity? No, you're a prisoner, we'll treat you the way we want."

BARRIERS TO LEGAL CHALLENGE

The U.S. military argues forced feeding is not only legal but also humane. A federal judge agreed in 2009, ruling against Mohammed Bawazir, a Yemeni national held at Guantanamo since 2002. Bawazir called forced feeding torture.

Bawazir cited pain he experienced and use of a chair with "six-point restraints" that kept in place his forehead, limbs and torso. U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler in Washington, D.C., said officials acted out of a need to preserve life.

A further barrier to any suit is the Military Commissions Act of 2006 which bars U.S. courts from hearing cases about Guantanamo detainee treatment. Even if they were to hear a challenge to forced feeding, the overriding evidence is the courts would rule against the detainees.

International law, which prohibits the inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners, is not necessarily any help to Guantanamo detainees either.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled at least twice that forced feeding amounted to torture, in a 2005 case out of Ukraine and in a 2007 case out of Moldova, but it stopped short of barring the procedure. The court said it may be used to preserve the life of hunger strikers if shown to be medically necessary and not done for punitive reasons.

Other reports of non-U.S. countries using forced feeding are rare, although experts said there is a lack of data. The practice has been described in news reports in Bahrain, China and Greece during the past decade.

Ten British-held Irish Republican Army prisoners, including former IRA commander Bobby Sands, starved to death in the Maze prison in Northern Ireland during a 1981 hunger strike during which they sought recognition as political prisoners. It ended when the families of the remaining hunger strikers authorized doctors to begin life-saving intravenous feeding as soon as the prisoners lost consciousness.

One early U.S. case involved Mark David Chapman, convicted in the 1980 killing of former Beatle John Lennon. Chapman broke a 26-day fast in 1982 only under a New York court-ordered threat he would be force-fed. Now 57, he is serving a prison sentence of 20 years to life.

Chapman had said he wanted to draw attention to starving children, but the court ruled the state's obligations to protect life and maintain order in its institutions outweighed Chapman's rights to free expression and to privacy.

BALANCING TEST

Most federal and state courts have agreed.

In Rhode Island, for example, finding that prisons have a duty to protect inmates' health, the State Supreme Court ruled in 1995 that "it would be in total disregard of this duty to stand idly by while a healthy adult decided to end his or her life by starvation just as it would if he or she decided to end his or her life by some more dramatic means such as hanging, slashing of wrists, or swallowing some type of poison."

Courts in three states - California, Florida and Georgia - have been exceptions, restricting forced feeding on various grounds, Mara Silver wrote in a 2005 Stanford Law Review article on the constitutional question of self-starvation.

California was the most sweeping. Prison officials must demonstrate "a threat to institutional security or public safety," not merely the conjecture of one, before denying an inmate the choice not to eat, the state's high court ruled.

Those are the exceptions however.

"The federal courts analyze the issue by balancing the prisoner's right to autonomy against the prison's right to maintain order, and they nearly always find that force-feeding is constitutional," said Margo Schlanger, a University of Michigan law professor with expertise in prisons.

My taxes are done, now what? | MNN - Mother Nature Network

The April 15 tax deadline has come and gone but that doesn?t mean you don?t have to think about your finances until next year. ?Now is the time for a little personal finance spring cleaning. ?The steps you take now will not only help you improve your future financial situation, these tips will also better prepare you for filing next year?s tax return.

?

Review your most recent return

I know, the last thing you want to do is revisit the tax return you just filed but now is the best time to review your return, while the information is still fresh. ?Did you have tax due or did you receive a large refund? ?If so, consider changing your withholding. ?Did you lose important receipts and miss out on charitable donation deductions and other credits? ?If so, put a plan in place now to save receipts. ?Personally, I scan receipts so that I have a digital copy as a backup to the original.

?

Retirement savings

Experts recommend that you check your retirement savings account annually; since you have to file a tax return annually tacking this spring cleaning step onto your schedule just makes sense. ?Make sure you?re saving enough to meet your retirement needs, rebalance your account and don?t forget to sit down with an invest professional to get a big-picture look at your financial future.

?

Short-term savings plans

Don?t just set up a savings plan for retirement, you also need to look at any near-term financial goals. ?Do you need to boost your cash emergency fund? ?If so, write out a plan that details how you will meet this goal. ?Is a family vacation in the works for next year? ?Start a savings plan now so that you can cash flow your trip.

?

Check your credit report

Did you know that 42 million Americans have errors on their credit report? ?Errors can lower your credit score and in turn, increase the interest rate you pay on your mortgage, auto insurance and other financial products. ?Get into the habit of checking your credit report annually; you can order a free report from each of the three major credit bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com

?

Make a plan to pay down debt

Are you still paying on student loans even though you graduated a decade ago? ?Is your credit card debt load stagnant? ?If so, you may just need to have a written plan to make a dent in your debt. ?Simply write down each of your credit account balances, including auto loans, credit cards and student loans, and then put them in the order you want to pay them off. ?Some folks prefer highest interest rate to lowest interest rate and others want to start with the smallest debt first. ?I don?t care how you order them, just put them in order and write out how you plan on paying them off as soon as possible. ?This means making more than the minimum payment so you may need to look elsewhere in your budget for an extra $20 or $100 a month to expedite the process.

IRIScan Mouse

Scanners and mice are more similar than you might expect. Just as a mouse can sweep the breadth and height of an on-screen page, a device like a wand scanner can capture images of physical documents as it sweeps across lines or blocks of text. The IRIScan Mouse merges the two devices. You can use it as a mouse, and with a click of a button you can scan a physical document, OCR it, save it in various formats, or send it to social media or the Cloud.

The Mouse Scanner as a Mouse
The IRIScan Mouse is a wired mouse, connecting to a computer's USB port. The device is reasonably attractive, black (glossy on top, matte on the sides and bottom) with green trim. The Scan button, on the left side, glows blue, and blinks when a scan is in progress. On the bottom of the mouse is a plastic window through which the scan element can read the page. A flickering white light illuminates the page while you're scanning.

I've used the IRIScan Mouse as my normal work mouse for about a week, and in that capacity?in terms of scrolling and doing other typical mouse tasks?it's operated smoothly, with only a single issue of note. The scan button is on the left side of the mouse, right where I rest the ball of my thumb. The scan button requires a bit of pressure to activate, but nonetheless I've triggered it accidentally while writing a review or working in a Word document. Doing so is an annoyance, as it takes a few moments to stop and then cancel the scan. It happens most frequently when I'm standing at my test bench taking notes, though I've also accidentally initiated scans while typing at my desk.

Software
The scanning software comes on an included disk, which you install on your PC (it is Windows only). Software includes IRISCompressor, which enables compression of image and PDF files. You can send notes to Evernote?the IRIScan Mouse includes 3 free months of Evernote Premium. You can also send scanned text directly to Google Translate. Output formats include PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PDF, XML, and DOC.

Scanning With the Mouse
To scan, you place the mouse on a document, press the scan button, and sweep the mouse across the parts of the document you want to scan. As you scan a larger area, the view will automatically zoom out. You'll want to have plenty of free room to the sides of the document if you want to scan the whole thing. I found the scanning process awkward, as tracking wasn't that great.

When you're done scanning, you press the scan button again; the scan will appear rectangular and properly aligned. The Edit menu will appear; you can Paste the scan (either as image or text); Share (to email, Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr); send it to Apps (Evernote or Google Translate); Save (to the file formats mentioned below); Print; Edit; or access Settings.

When you paste a scan as text to a program like Word, the IRIScan software will perform text recognition on it, a quick process. Then you can edit or save the document. OCR performance was a mixed bag. It read our Arial test page at sizes down to 8 points without a mistake, but with Times New Roman it had some errors at all sizes up to 12 points.

The IRIScan Mouse is best for scanning individual sheets of paper; scanning from a magazine proved tricky at times as the text wouldn't always stay flat enough for a clean scan. Also, since the scan window is on the left side of the mouse, it was hard (and sometimes impossible) to scan to the inner margin on left-handed pages.

For about $50 more than you'd pay for a normal wired mouse, you can get the IRIScan Mouse, a wired (USB-connected) mouse that can scan to text or image, provides text recognition, and can save scanned documents to various formats as well as perform as a typical mojuse. It's best for occasional, light-duty scanning of documents or images. The scanner portion is most akin to a wand scanner such as the Editors' Choice VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Wi-Fi PDSWF-ST44-VP . However, most wand scanners operate PC-free, while the IRIScan Mouse doesn't.

For years, they were part of the splendor at Saint Irenaeus Church in Clinton. Three large stained glass windows are?the originals from the church. Over time, pieces from the windows began to deteriorate, and were desperately in need of repair.

That's where?technicians from Glass Heritage of Davenport stepped in. For?several months, the technicians have been involved in a labor intensive project to restore the windows. Each piece of glass is cleaned. Technician Patricia Rogers says the pieces are placed on a build pattern. That pattern shows the lead lines of the windows.??

Kirk Prebyl says technicians do their homeowrk before the repairs and replacements are made. Technicians spend hours planning, documenting, and finding ways to restore the windows as much as possible to their original look. Workers treasure every scrap of original glass, replacing the original only when there is no other choice.

The three windows depict the Crucified Christ, and two figures on either side. Each of the windows has about a thousand pieces of stained glass. The windows should be installed in the church in June.

The Clinton County Historical Society owns the church building. The society acquired it when the Diocese of Davenport decided to close the church. ?The society raised about fourteen thousand dollars for the restoration work.?Glass Heritage is certified by the Stained Glass Association of America. ?

CA-BUSINESS Summary

TSX ends higher as U.S. data, Potash earnings help

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index advanced for the sixth straight session on Thursday, helped by the materials sector, as U.S. economic data and a stronger-than-expected earnings performance from Potash Corp boosted sentiment. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> unofficially closed up 59.08 points, or 0.48 percent, at 12,329.51. Nine of the 10 main sectors of the index were higher.

Shoppers Drug Mart revenue up on over-the-counter sales

(Reuters) - Shoppers Drug Mart Corp , Canada's biggest pharmacy chain, reported a 4 percent rise in first-quarter revenue as higher over-the-counter sales helped to offset tighter price controls for generics. The price controls, which were recently tightened, have crimped growth at Shoppers and rivals such as Jean Coutu Group Inc in recent years.

Amazon first-quarter revenue matches expectations

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc's first-quarter revenue jumped 22 percent to $16.07 billion, propelled by growing sales of digital content, cloud-computing services and gains in its main retail business. The world's largest Internet retailer had been expected to record revenue of $16.1 billion in the typically slower first quarter, according to average forecasts on Wall Street.

Starbucks second-quarter profit rises

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp reported higher quarterly profit on Thursday, helped by strength in the United States, its top market, despite an industry-wide spending downturn in February due to a U.S. payroll tax increase that lowered take-home pay. The world's biggest coffee chain reported net earnings of $390.4 million, or 51 cents per share, for the fiscal second quarter that ended on March 31. That compares with $309.9 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier.

Global stocks rise after surprise U.S. data, bonds fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stock markets rose and bond prices fell on Thursday as data indicated the U.S. labor market remains resilient despite recent signs of slower growth, while earnings that are beating lowered expectations helped buoy investor sentiment. Wall Street opened higher, following gains in Europe, where markets were lifted on growing expectations that the European Central Bank will soon cut interest rates.

Dow Chemical sees farm products driving profit this year

(Reuters) - Dow Chemical Co posted a better-than-expected 33 percent jump in quarterly profit as farmers in the Americas bought more of its seeds and pesticides, overshadowing a decline in European demand for its plastics. Dow, the largest U.S. chemical maker by sales, forecast that demand for its seeds and crop-protection products would drive further growth after a quarter in which its agricultural science business posted the highest sales growth of its various units.

Boeing gets 50 new orders for 737 jets

Exclusive: Verizon eyes roughly $100 billion bid for Vodafone's wireless stake

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc has hired advisers to prepare a possible $100 billion bid to take full control of Verizon Wireless from its partner Vodafone Group Plc , two people familiar with the matter said. Verizon is contemplating a roughly 50:50 cash and stock bid for the 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless it does not already own, an asset it has long coveted, the sources said. It has not put a proposal to Vodafone yet but has hired banking and legal advisers for a possible offer, the sources said late Wednesday.

Oil production rises for Exxon, Conoco in first-quarter

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Quarterly results from Exxon Mobil Corp and ConocoPhillips on Thursday showed that while overall growth remained elusive, output rose in key basins in the United States where the oil and gas companies are spending heavily to grow crude production. North American shale basins and the Gulf of Mexico are seen as more secure places for energy companies to invest because they typically offer a steady source of growth. Conoco said in December that more than half of its nearly $16 billion budget for 2013 will be spent in North America.

Immigration Act: Dream Or Nightmare? | Power Line

Senator Jeff Sessions? staff has begun assembling summaries of key provisions of the Gang of Eight?s immigration bill. They released the first one, which deals with how the act treats ?dreamers,? this afternoon. It is titled, ?Immigration Bill S. 744 Allows Milllions of Illegal Immigrants to Become Citizens in 5 Years ? And Bring Their Relatives On An Expedited Basis.?

* Those who qualify for the broad DREAM Act fast-track amnesty under S. 744 ? estimated by Steve Camarota to be between 2 to 3 million people ? are able to become citizens after being in registered provisional immigrant (RPI) status (the general amnesty) for 5 years. Those 5 years are deemed as having been spent in legal permanent resident status (under current law LPRs must wait 5 years before becoming citizens).

o There is NO AGE CAP on eligibility
o The Secretary can allow a deported DREAMer who is outside the U.S. or who has re-entered the U.S. illegally after the December 31, 2011 cut-off date to apply for this status.

* Illegal agriculture workers will also be placed on an expedited path: green cards in five years and citizenship in ten. This could apply to close to a million people or more.

* So-called DREAMers will also be able to get green cards for their parents, spouses and children five years from enactment. They will then be eligible for citizenship five years after that. Therefore the DREAM provision of the bill alone would be responsible for potentially 10 million new citizens in five-ten years [rough estimation].

* S. 744 would allow unlimited visas for the spouses and children of all green card holders ? both those currently illegal and new legal immigrants, leading to exponential chain migration.

* In addition, under S. 744, any LPR can petition for visas for adult unmarried sons and daughters (but they must wait for a visa to become available). A citizen also will be able to petition for their married sons and daughters under the age of 31 if visas are available under the family-based visa cap.

* S. 744 appears to allow those who have been granted status under President Obama?s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA) to immediately adjust to LPR status under a ?streamlined procedure? determined by the Secretary and consistent with the DACA requirements. These individuals may petition for visas for family members in the same manner as the LPRs described above. According to USCIS statistics, 472,004 DACA applications were accepted for review between August 2012 and March 2013; 268,361 were approved; only 16,778 were deemed incomplete and required resubmission; and only 1,377 were denied.

* Taking into account the expedited legalization of illegal immigrants, the expansion of low-skill legal immigration, and the new avenues for chain migration, the bill would exponentially increase the number of people granted legal status.

The Gang?s bill would bring about a demographic transformation of the United States by enabling tens of millions new immigrants, largely through the perverse policy of chain immigration. The consequences of inundating the United States with tens of millions of uneducated, low-wage workers are poorly understood, but certain to be bad. I can understand why some Democrats would favor this kind of radical transformation of America, which they don?t much like to begin with. But why any Republicans would look favorably on it is beyond me.

HTC One gets camera update, improves HDR images and audio recording

Despite recent strong competition, several Engadget editors' love affair with the HTC One continues unabated. We've mused plenty on its Ultrapixel camera, but we're not going to refuse improvements, which is good, because that's exactly what HTC's offering its European customers. An incoming software update for existing handsets promises better noise reduction on slow-motion videos, improved dynamic range from HDR shots and enhanced audio recording on your Zoe clips. Naturally, there's some performance and stability improvements included, if you're not all about the imaging. According to SlashGear, the software refresh will arrive on European handsets this week, though we're still waiting for it to land on our own UK device.

CSN: Sveum pondering future with Cubs

CINCINNATI ? Dale Sveum didn?t take much heat for last year?s 101-loss season, but another bad start has him wondering about his future.

The Cubs manager carries himself likes he?s done this job forever, and his fingerprints are all over the organization. But a sloppy 5-13 start has tested everyone?s patience, and it?s not so much the record as the way his team has been losing.

?I?d be lying if you didn?t think about yourself through some of this stuff, too,? Sveum said Monday. ?That?s stuff you don?t have control over. I got control over my job and the coaching staff to prepare everybody every day. ? That?s all I can do.?

[BOX SCORE: Cubs fall to Reds in extras]?

Sveum then had to watch from the dugout at Great American Ball Park as his team went 13 innings before absorbing a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Cincinnati Reds, with ex-Cub Cesar Izturis lining a two-out single into left field off Michael Bowden.

The rollercoaster lasted four hours and 35 minutes and went like this: The Cubs wasted another good start by Travis Wood, two gutsy innings from Carlos Marmol, a bases-loaded chance in the 11th and Luis Valbuena?s go-ahead, two-run homer in the 13th.

To be clear, Sveum is not the scapegoat here. Ownership has instituted an austerity program at the big-league level, turning the Cubs into a mid-market team waiting for the Wrigley Field renovation and a new television contract after the 2014 season.

The baseball operations department is focused on the June draft and developing a critical mass of prospects. But as the manager likes to say: This is a performance-based business.

[MORE: The entertainer - Brandon Phillips says whatever's on his mind]?

The Cubs could have gone with a more experienced high-profile manager, but the front office wanted a teacher who would oversee this rebuilding project and grow with the organization.

Sveum was asked if he feels the support from president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer.

?Oh yeah, no doubt,? Sveum said.

Epstein and Hoyer structured Sveum?s contract ? a three-year deal that contains a club option for 2015 ? with the understanding that the Cubs were building for the future and he wouldn?t be judged on wins and losses right away.

During the offseason, Hoyer put it this way: ?The 101 losses ? it?s on Theo and it?s on me. That?s not on Dale.?

Sveum?s initial job description became establishing ?The Cubs Way,? stressing fundamentals and creating a professional culture where young players could develop. From April through September last year, the team played hard and maintained a drama-free clubhouse. The players also took advantage of the video/advance scouting systems pushed by his staff.

But the Cubs have committed 17 errors through 18 games this season, leading to 14 unearned runs and more questions about the organization?s overall direction.

?Nobody?s exempt,? Sveum said.

Sveum?s frustration could be sensed during Sunday?s pregame media session in Milwaukee, where he repeatedly wouldn?t rule out the idea of sending core players Anthony Rizzo and/or Starlin Castro to Triple-A Iowa.

?Well, you guys asked me if (they) couldn?t get sent down. I just said nobody was exempt (from) it,? Sveum said. ?They?re not the only ones. You guys were pushing them towards that question.?

The Cubs didn?t give in on Monday night and hung with a team that has World Series ambitions. Sveum doesn?t hide out in his office. He walks through the clubhouse and connects with players. So far, 15 of their 18 games have been decided by three runs or less.

?It?s easy to be down, but also hard to be down,? Wood said. ?It?s not like we?re getting blown out every game. We?re right there every game. We just got to come together as a team and figure out how to pull them out.

?You just got to hang in there and ride it out. Tides will turn.?

In the fall of 2011, the Cubs said they wanted to hire the next Terry Francona, who guided the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles and kept in contact with Epstein throughout the search process.

The front office believes Sveum will be there when the Cubs are contenders again. His influence has only grown stronger, from making staffing decisions to watching video of potential draft picks to recruiting free agents. Win or lose, this team will be shaped in his image.?

?I?m not pointing fingers at (Rizzo and Castro) or anything,? Sveum said. ?I?m just (saying): Hey, we?re all (accountable for) this. I?m (not) exempt (from) being fired, so is my coaching staff. We all are in this together as a team. And as coaches, managers, we try and get people better in any manner we can.??

Film Threat - The 2013 Independent Film Festival Of Boston Kicks ...

Obviously the city of Boston has had a pretty rough and weird month. But the city?s never been one to sit back and take all the horrible things life has to offer without fighting back and carrying on. Boston is tough and so is the Independent Film Festival of Boston, which kicks off Wednesday, April 24 as planned. The fest, which runs through Tuesday, April 30, will take place all over Boston and features over 1300 film screenings, 105 films, filmmaker Q&A sessions, panel discussions, visiting filmmakers, parties and events. Not to mention the IFFBoston has been recognized as the premiere film festival of Boston.

I should be there throughout the festival and there are many films I?m excited to see. As you may have heard via the Film Threat Podcast, I?ve never attended IFFBoston but have long respected the hard-working people who run the fest, as well as their smart move of cherry picking the best films from the festival circuit and adding in some nice premieres as well. The festival should be a great chance to see some films I?ve heard great things about as well as meet filmmakers and fellow movie geeks who want to have a good time in one of America?s most awesome cities. Yeah, I?ve always wanted to go and I?m excited to finally get a chance.

Every year there are films at festivals that I really want to see and always manage to miss. For instance, on this year?s festival circuit, I?ve missed the heavily lauded films ?Sightseers,? ?The Spectacular Now,? Touchy Feely,? ?Frances Ha? and ?Computer Chess,? and they?re all playing at IFFBoston. Films I saw this year and liked such as ?The East,? ?Prince Avalanche? and ?V/H/S/ 2? are also programmed, and I can vouch that all three are worth checking out. I think the film I?m most excited to see is Bobcat Goldthwait?s found-footage Bigfoot movie ?Willow Creek.? Yeah, Bobcat Goldthwait made a found-footage Bigfoot movie. Need I say more?

I?ll include the full list of films (shorts, features and docs!) and panels below and if you see me at the fest, be sure to say hello!
