Richard (RJ) Eskow: David Brooks Thinks Romney's a "Modern Capitalist." He's Right.

David Brooks says Obama's attacks on Romney's business record are "about capitalism." That's like saying an arrest for vehicular homicide is "about driving."

Our economic "roads" are jammed with destructive drivers like Romney. They're menacing motorists with their massive semis and monster dumptrucks while the traffic laws go unenforced. And whenever there's a lethal pileup their friends say it proves we shouldn't have traffic laws at all.

Brooks says that the President's campaign rhetoric "challenges the entire logic of capitalism as it has existed over several decades." That sounds like a subliminal suggestion from the liberals' favorite conservative that Barack Obama's a socialist. But if there's anything that needs to be challenged at this point in history it's "the entire logic of capitalism as it has existed over several decades."

This decades-long wave of unchecked corporate greed was brought about by deregulation, along with other symptoms of a corrupting collusion between corporate and political leaders. That unholy marriage has been made manifest in the very being of Mitt Romney.

Brooks conflates the economic rampage this process has created with capitalism itself - or, in a phrase he uses no less than three times in an 800-word piece, "modern capitalism." Those two words embrace behaviors that include both Wall Street lawlessness and the government largesse that inflates the wealth of people like Mitt Romney, whose firm's first success was made possible by a Massachusetts tax deal and whose personal fortune has been padded by undeserved loopholes.

Today's big-corporate czars are the worst case studies in unchecked greed since the Robber Barons. You'll need a phrase like "Modern Capitalism" if you're trying to defend their misdeeds. The words resonate with entrepreneurial spirit, which the American public loves. And who could be against the "modern" except a Luddite or a fool?

(Or a socialist, of course.)

Today's big-money CEOs aren't really "capitalist." The popular American notion of "capitalism" fits Merriam-Webster's definition: "An economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market."

But that's not how it works anymore. Wall Street has deceived and defrauded courts, homeowners, account holders, shareholders, government agencies and investors on an epic scale. Market choices - which bank to use, whether to invest in big-bank shares or purchase mortgage-backed securities - aren't "determined by private decision" at all. They're driven by long-standing patterns of fraud and deception.

Our largest corporations survive and thrive because of government patronage, not market forces. That's especially true of the too-big-to-fail banks which the government rescued after the crisis, and which it continues to prop up with cheap Federal Reserve money, lax regulation of civil and criminal laws, and the moral hazard that comes with the implicit guarantee of future bailouts.

The LIBOR scandal reminds us that prices are often determined, not by "competition in the free market," but by price-fixing, investor fraud, and market manipulation by a very small group of "too big to fail" players.

David Brooks' conception of "modern capitalism" should repel most Americans, and according to polling data it does. Conservatives should be as outraged as anyone - maybe more so, since it flies in the face of everything they claim to hold dear: transparency, integrity, freedom from government control, and an economy guided by "the wisdom of the markets."

In other words, what David Brooks calls "modern capitalism" isn't capitalism at all.

It's not modern, either. The government/big business cronyism Brooks defends is as ancient as the Roman and Athenian politicians who gave bribes for personal profit. It's as old as the Union Pacific/Cr?dit Mobilier scandal of 1872. It's as stale as J. Pierpont Morgan responding to charges of illegal restraint of trade by asking Teddy Roosevelt, "Why don't you just send your man to my man and we'll fix it up?" It's as antiquated as bank magnate Andrew Mellon, who as Hoover's Treasury Secretary articulated the credo which corporate predators re-state whenever they've caused economic disaster:

"Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmers, liquidate real estate ..."

Brooks hits closer to home when he points out that, contrary to campaign rhetoric, Obama has employed or been friendly with some dubious "Modern Capitalists." He's right to say the President hasn't acted against globalization. He even missed the chance to knock Obama for supporting additional free trade agreements. The President should do a better job of matching his actions to his rhetoric.

Then there's Mitt. Seems like everybody's got some advice for him nowadays: Release your taxes. Don't release your taxes. Focus on Obama. Focus on the future. Don't focus at all. There's only one piece of advice Romney hasn't been given: Be yourself.

Think about that.

But out of all the unsolicited suggestions coming Mitt's way, none can be worse that the one offered by David Brooks. "Romney is going to have to define a vision of modern capitalism," Brooks writes. Define a vision of modern capitalism?

That's Romney's biggest problem: He already has.

US, China square off over South China Sea

(AP Photo/Heng Sinith)

(AP) ? The Obama administration pressed Beijing on Thursday to accept a code of conduct for resolving territorial disputes in the resource-rich South China Sea, a difficult U.S. mediation effort that has faced resistance from the communist government. It has endeared the U.S., however, to once-hostile countries in Southeast Asia.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' annual conference.

Sitting across from each other at a long table in a grand hall with chandeliers, Clinton stressed the different ways Washington and Beijing are cooperating. Yang spoke of building an even closer U.S.-Chinese relationship. Neither side spoke about the South China Sea while reporters were allowed in the room.

Several Asian governments have expressed worry about China's expansive maritime claims. Tensions have threatened to boil over in recent months, with a standoff between Chinese and Philippine ships and sharp disagreements between China and Vietnam.

China claims virtually the entire area and has created an entirely new city to administer it, sparking deep concern from rival claimants. The sea hosts about a third of the world's cargo traffic, has rich fishing grounds and is believed to store vast oil and gas reserves.

"The United States has no territorial claims there and we do not take sides in disputes about territorial or maritime boundaries," Clinton told foreign ministers gathered in Cambodia's capital. "But we do have an interest in freedom of navigation, the maintenance of peace and stability, respect for international law and unimpeded lawful commerce in the South China Sea."

Asian countries should "work collaboratively and diplomatically to resolve disputes without coercion, without intimidation, without threats and without use of force," Clinton added.

ASEAN's 10 members announced earlier this week that they have drafted a set of rules governing maritime rights and navigation, and procedures for when governments disagree. But China is not a member of the group and hasn't agreed to anything.

The ASEAN countries are presenting their proposal to China at this week's conference in Cambodia's capital, though Beijing will probably want to water down any language that ties its hands.

For the United States, the difficult diplomacy ahead could be a major test of the Obama administration's efforts to "pivot" American power toward the world's most populous continent. Just speaking out on the subject already has helped the U.S. deepen ties with Vietnam, and relations are warming with other governments in the region.

But countless meetings between American and Chinese officials have not led to progress on a lasting solution.

Various longstanding disputes among China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei involve the area's busy sea lanes, and many observers fear the complicated web of disputes could spark a violent conflict.

The standoff between China and the Philippines in the Scarborough Shoal off the northwestern Philippines began in April when the Philippines accused Chinese fishermen of poaching in its exclusive economic zone, including the shoal. During the tensions, both sides sent government ships to the area though both have since withdrawn vessels.

Vietnam has protested a recent announcement by the China National Offshore Oil Corp. opening nine oil and gas lots for international bidders in areas overlapping with existing Vietnamese exploration blocks. Vietnam says the lots lie entirely within its 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

Viewsonic VA2231wm-LED

Green Tech

With the Viewsonic VA2231wm-LED ($140 street) you get bright colors, dark blacks, and a crisp high definition picture for under $150. The 21.5 inch TN+ panel can't display the brightest shades of gray, however, and it's missing one of the most widely used digital inputs. On the plus side, it won't put a strain on your electric bill.

Design and Features

The VA2231wm's 1,902-by-1,080 TN+ panel is shrouded in a matte black cabinet with glossy black bezels that are 0.76 inches wide. At 2.5 inches the cabinet is fairly thick for an LED backlit monitor, especially when compared with the Acer S230HL ($189 list, 3 Stars), which is only one-inch deep at its thickest point. The bottom bezel curves downward on the center to accommodate five function buttons; a power switch, menu and input select keys, and two OSD navigation buttons. One of the buttons doubles as a hot key for adjusting contrast and one adjusts the speaker volume. The 2 watt speakers are typical monitor issue; they don't get very loud, and they lack bass, but they are adequate for low volume listening.

You don't get an HDMI port with the VA2231wm, which is unfortunate considering most game consoles and other entertainment devices use HDMI as their primary output. What you do get is one DVI and one VGA input and an audio-in jack, all of which are located on the rear of the cabinet. Other features such as USB ports, a webcam, and a height adjustable stand are not available on this model. The shiny black oval base does allow you to tilt the panel, however.

Picture settings are limited; in addition to Contrast, Brightness, and Dynamic Contrast Ratio controls there are five Color Temperature presets (sRGB, 9300k, 7500k, 6500k, 5000k) and a User setting that lets you create your own custom color setting by adjusting red, green, and blue values. There are also three ECO mode settings including Standard, Optimize, and Conserve. In Standard mode the VA2231wm used 17 watts of power during my testing, while Optimize used 15 watts and Conserve used 12 watts. Although screen brightness is diminished in Conserve mode the picture is still bright enough for most lighting environments. As such, the VA2231wm's low power characteristics earn it our Greentech stamp of approval.

Viewsonic covers the VA2231wm-LED with a three year warranty that includes parts, labor, and backlighting. The monitor comes with a CD containing drivers and a user manual, DVI and VGTA cables, and an audio cable.

Performance

The VA2231wm-LED provides bright, bold colors and dark blacks. Colors ramped smoothly from dark to light on the DisplayMate Color Scales test and skin tones were natural looking on my blu-ray test video, 2012. The panel did an adequate job of displaying each shade of dark gray on the 64-Step Grayscale test but light grays were clipped at the high end of the scale and appeared white. As a result, highlight detail on my test photos was washed out. Small text (5.3 points) was legible but not quite as clean as what I observed with the Acer S230HL.

The panel's five-millisecond (black-to-white) pixel response helped deliver smooth game play; the PC version of Duke Nukem Forever looked crisp and did not show any obvious motion artifacts such as ghosting or blurring. Off angle viewing was good for a TN+ panel; there was some color shifting when viewed from the far end of either side but the effect was not as severe as it was with the HP 2311gt ($299.99 list, 3 Stars).

The Viewsonic VA2231wm-LED will appeal to energy-conscious users on a budget. It delivers a bright, colorful picture with solid blacks and it does it without using a lot of power. Light grayscale performance is lacking, however, and features are scarce. An HDMI port would be a welcome addition here. The IPS-based Asus VS229H-P ($160 list, 4 Stars), on the other hand, is only $20 more and offers superior color, grayscale, and viewing angle performance, and it has HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports. That's why the Asus VS229H-P remains our Editors' Choice for budget monitors.
