Group Photo Sharing Is a Fustercluck, But It Doesn?t Have To Be With Cluster

clusterNew photo-sharing app Cluster is focused on sharing photos with one's friends and family after a shared experience. Just like its namesake, the idea behind the app is to create a "cluster" of photos, and then invite friends to join. The initial user sets a time range and location for photos, and then can upload some of his or her own.

Got $5,000? You could name this woman's baby

Natasha Hill (Belly Ballot/Facebook)

A California woman expecting a baby in September has agreed to allow online voters name her child in exchange for $5,000.

Natasha Hill, a 26-year-old art teacher from Los Angeles, won a contest launched by Belly Ballot, an Austin, Texas-based startup that allows expecting parents to crowdsource their baby names with friends and family.

Hill was one of 80 women to enter the site's Belly Branding contest. According to Belly Ballot, voters will be presented with a list of 10 names?five boy names and five girl names?selected by the company and advertisers sponsoring the contest. According to Belly Ballot founder Lacey Moler, product names or names that are ?too crazy" will not be allowed.

Hill said she plans to use the cash to pay down credit card debt and start a college fund for her unborn child.

?I?m so excited to have won!? she wrote in a post on the Belly Ballot blog. ?The whole Belly Ballot concept is so social and fun, and can?t wait to see what everyone votes for!?

Online voting takes place March 18-22, and the girl and boy names with the most votes when the ballot concludes will be one that Hill's baby will legally have?at least until he or she turns 18.

The contest has stirred debate among traditionalists who believe deciding on a baby name should be a personal decision among parents.

?This is crazy," one commenter on the Belly Ballot blog wrote. "You should all be ashamed of yourselves for even considering this. What are you going to tell your baby when they ask you how you chose their name? Don't do it, you will regret this.?

?Don?t get me wrong, I could use the money," wrote another. "But this sounds a bit outrageous."

Moler disagrees.

"This might not appeal to everyone, and we definitely respect parents who choose to keep their name and the baby naming process more private," Moler told SheKnows.com. "However, we are allowing baby naming to become more social, and a lot of parents love being able to include their friends and family in the process."

Hill?who had previously considered names including Katorah and Winter?told NBC Los Angeles she won't be monitoring the online vote.

?I?m afraid if I look at them I?ll get my favorite one,? Hill said. ?And then I?ll be disappointed.?

Beer cos., DOJ in resolution talks for $20.1B deal

The U.S. Department of Justice is talking with beer makers Anheuser-Busch InBev and Grupo Modelo about potentially resolving a legal challenge to their $20.1 billion deal.

The beer companies and the government are asking the court for a stay of all litigation proceedings until March 19. There is no guarantee a resolution will be found.

The Justice Department in January sued to block the combination, saying having one company controlling nearly half of all U.S. beer sales would stifle competition. The beer makers recently revised the terms of the acquisition, which would give more control of Modelo's U.S. beer brands to a wine company, Constellation Brands Inc., in a side deal.

The government is weighing whether the revised terms of the deal resolve its concerns about market competition.

Oh yeah, Angry Birds Seasons is available for Windows Phone 7 too

Yesterday Rovio surprised us with the announcement of Angry Birds Seasons for Windows Phone 8. The announcements don?t end there. Rovio has also made Angry Birds Seasons available for Windows Phone 7 devices. This is the fourth Angry Birds game for Windows Phone along with the?original, Space,?and Star Wars versions.

What makes Seasons different? This version is all about the time of the year and holidays. There are levels for just about every season and holiday. The mechanics of Seasons is very similar to the original Angry Birds. There are no new abilities or characters. Previous Angry Birds games have not?received?much support after launch, so we?ll have to see how Seasons is handled. The one difference between the WP7 and 8 versions is that the WP7 version is not for Xbox. It is also available for $.99.

Police offer confused testimony in Pistorius case

Oscar Pistorius arrived at the court building in a police car with a blue blanket covering his head Wednesday as prosecutors prepared to detail why they are charging him with premeditated murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend. Prosecutors want to show why he should be denied bail. Pistorius denies the charge, and said it was an accidental shooting. (AP) ? The detective leading the police investigation into Oscar Pistorius' fatal shooting of his girlfriend offered confusing testimony Wednesday, at one point agreeing with the athlete's defense that officers had no evidence challenging the runner's claim he accidentally killed her.

Testimony by Detective Warrant Officer Hilton Botha of the South African Police Service left prosecutors rubbing their temples, only able to look down at their notes as he misjudged distances and acknowledged a forensics team left in the toilet bowl one of the bullet slugs fired at Reeva Steenkamp. However, Botha still poked holes in Pistorius' own account that he feared for his life and opened fire on Valentine's Day after mistaking Steenkamp for an intruder.

The second day of the bail hearing in a case that has riveted South Africa and much of the world appeared at first to go against the double-amputee runner, with prosecutors saying a witness can testify to hearing "non-stop talking, like shouting" between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. before the predawn shooting on Feb. 14. However, Botha later said under cross examination that the person who overheard the argument was in a house 600 meters (yards) away in Pistorius' gated community in the suburbs of South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

Later, prosecutor Gerrie Nel questioned Botha again and the detective acknowledged the distance was much closer. But confusion reigned for much of his testimony, when at one point Botha said officers found syringes and steroids in Pistorius' bedroom. Nel quickly cut the officer off and said the drugs were actually testosterone.

Pistorius' lead defense lawyer, Barry Roux, asserted when questioning the detective ? who has 16 years' experience as a detective and 24 years with the police ? that it was not a banned substance and that police were trying to give the discovery a "negative connotation."

"It is an herbal remedy," Roux said. "It is not a steroid and it is not a banned substance."

The name of the drug, offered later in court by Roux, could not be immediately found in reference materials by The Associated Press. A spokesman for prosecutors later said it's too early to know what the substance is, as they don't yet have results of forensic testing on the material.

Pistorius, 26, said in an affidavit read in court Tuesday that he and his 29-year-old girlfriend had gone to bed and that when he awoke during the night he detected what he thought was an intruder in the bathroom. He testified that he grabbed his 9 mm pistol and fired into the door of a toilet enclosed in the bathroom, only to discover later to his horror that Steenkamp was there, mortally wounded.

Pistorius, the first Paralympian runner to compete at the Olympics, is charged with premeditated murder in the case.

The prosecution attempted to cement its argument that the couple had a shouting match, that Steenkamp fled and locked herself into the toilet stall of the bathroom and that Pistorius fired four shots through the door, hitting her with three bullets.

Botha said: "I believe that he knew that Reeva was in the bathroom and he shot four shots through the door."

But asked if the police found anything inconsistent with the version of events presented by Pistorius, Botha responded that they had not. He later said nothing contradicted the police's version either.

Nel projected a plan of the bedroom and bathroom in the courtroom and argued that Pistorius had to walk past his bed to get to the bathroom and could not have done so without realizing that Steenkamp was not in the bed.

"There's no other way of getting there," Nel said.

Botha said the trajectory of the bullets showed the gun was fired pointed down and from a height. This seems to conflict with Pistorius' statement Tuesday, because the athlete said that he did not have on his prosthetics and on his stumps and feeling vulnerable because he was in a low position when he opened fired.

Officers also found .38-caliber pistol rounds in a safe, which Botha said Pistorius owned illegally and for which he said the athlete would be charged with a crime. However, Botha also acknowledged investigators didn't take photographs of the ammunition and let Pistorius' supporters at the crime scene take them away.

Botha said the holster for the 9 mm pistol was found under the left side of the bed, the side on which Steenkamp slept. He also implied it would have been impossible for Pistorius to get the gun without checking to see if Steenkamp was there. Roux later argued that Pistorius had suffered an injury to his right shoulder and wore a "medical patch" the night of the killing which forced him to sleep on the left side of the bed.

Steenkamp was shot in the head over her right ear and in her right elbow and hip, breaking her arm and hip, Botha said. However, Roux later asked Botha if Steenkamp's body showed "any pattern of defensive wounds." The detective said no.

Botha also said the shots were fired from 1.5 meters (five feet), and that police found three spent cartridges in the bathroom and one in the hallway connecting the bathroom to the bedroom. However, later on cross-examination by the defense, Botha said he wasn't a forensics expert and couldn't answer some questions.

Police also found two iPhones in the bathroom and two BlackBerrys in the bedroom, Botha said, adding that none had been used to phone for help. Roux later suggested that a fifth phone, not collected by the police, was used by Pistorius to make calls for a hospital and help. After the hearing, Roux told journalists that Pistorius' defense team had the phone, but did not elaborate.

Guards at the gated community where Pistorius lives did call the athlete, Botha said. The detective said that all the athlete said was: "I'm all right."

He didn't hang up, Botha said, and the guards heard him uncontrollably weep.

"Was it part of his premeditated plan, not to switch off the phone and cry?" Roux asked sarcastically.

Virginia Beach songwriter taking bite of the Big Apple

VIRGINIA BEACH

Winston O?Brien recently moved from Virginia Beach to New York City with hopes of broadening his music career.

The 25-year-old bought his first guitar five years ago and describes his music as ?aggressive indie folk.? He has written 92 songs, including one inspired by a road he often traveled in Virginia Beach.

?I delivered pizza on Elbow Road for a long time for Papa John?s,? O?Brien said during a recent phone interview. ?There?s a myth that if you go at night and look in your car?s rearview mirror, a witch will appear.?

Witches make for good lyrics.

O?Brien started his public music career as a regular performer at the KOA campground on General Booth Boulevard.

?There?s a bunch of older people there who liked to do the cover music,? O?Brien said, ?then I was the young buck coming in with the simple songs. It was a great community.?

Until last month, O?Brien was a server at Steinhilber?s restaurant in Thalia and a singer at various small venues in Hampton Roads.

He grew up in the Pocahantas Village neighborhood and graduated from Kempville High School in 2005. Back then, his name was John Myers Jr. Two years ago, while retuning his identity, he started going by Winston O?Brien.

O?Brien would organize his own music festivals and perform in his grandmother?s backyard in Birchwood.

?He had always enjoyed journaling and writing,? said his grandmother, Pat McNeil, ?and that was the piece that gives him his desire to make music.?

Within days of his move to New York, O?Brien found a room to rent in Manhattan and started performing his music on nights when he?s not at his restaurant job.

His grandmother has her fears of what life might be like in the big city, but is very proud of her grandson?s stepping out.

?He?s more reflective than outgoing,? McNeil said. ?It?s a real wonderful gift that he?s doing this, because he?s not a risk-taker.?

Here are reports from O'Briend from?his first days in the Big Apple:

Jan. 24: ?I canvassed 70th to 90th streets on Columbus and Amsterdam avenues. Arriving with 50 resumes, I had 13 left when I was done.

Jan. 25: ?Continuing the momentum, I went to find several specific restaurants that were hiring from Craigslist. I entered Firehouse restaurant, and Carl Wilson called the manager of A.G. Kitchen (the two restaurants are part of the same family business), where I quickly walked for an on-the-spot interview, and was hired.

Feb. 8: ?I?m feeling established and settled in. I?m making some friends. I can see upward momentum with the job thing, and I?m still focusing on making music and playing music. I did a four-day mini-tour to get to know New York. ?

Listen to Virginia Beach native Winston O?Brien?s brand of aggressive indie folk at www.reverbnation.com/winstonobrien. The Beacon hopes to regularly check in with O?Brien to see how his career is going in New York City.?

Cops use Facebook to notify mom of son's death

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

By Rosa Golijan

"Society has accepted social media as a major form of communication, and so have I," a statement prepared by a detective in the?Clayton County Police Department reads. Word got out that his department used Facebook to notify a woman of her son's death.

The statement, provided to TODAY, explains that "several traditional attempts" were made to notify the family of 30-year-old Ricky Lamb after the man died. "We make every possible attempt to apply best practices when handling these sensitive matters," the statement emphasizes.?After the traditional notification attempts failed, officers took to Facebook, sending the deceased's mother a private message via the social network.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reports, the mother,?Anna Lamb-Creasey, did not see the heartbreaking message until almost a month later. Due to the way Facebook handles messages from individuals with whom a user isn't "friends," the correspondence was buried in a folder labeled "Other." It never appeared in Lamb-Creasey's regular inbox. Additionally,?Lamb-Creasey told the AJC, the message came from an account belonging to a "Misty Hancock" which had "the profile picture of Atlanta rapper TI."?Both Lamb-Creasey and her daughter assumed that the message was fake when they saw it.

But as time passed and Lamb appeared to be missing, Lamb-Creasey's daughter finally called the phone number listed on the strange Facebook profile "and an officer gave her the bad news."

TODAY has made multiple attempts to reach?Lamb-Creasey for comment, but we have not heard back. She did tell the AJC that she was both furious that officers didn't manage to reach her via traditional means, and confused about the Facebook account used to contact her.

"People need to know that it's a police department trying to contact them. If you just have a picture of a rapper TI no one's gonna take that serious," Melissa Wilson, a friend of?Lamb-Creasey,?pointed out to the AJC.

"In an effort to prevent this from occurring again, immediate changes are being made," the Clayton County Police Department?statement explains. For starters, the department will launch an official Facebook page.

"This site will serve as another format to relay current events and notifications to the community that we serve," the statement adds. "We will continue the traditional methods of personal face to face contact as we integrate this new tool of social media." Additionally, a "thorough review" of the Ricky Lamb death notification will be conducted.

All better? Great! Now, repay 11 years of workers' comp ? Business ...

A South Carolina man has been convicted of workers? compensation fraud for bilking the Ohio Bureau of Workers? Compensation out of $143,203.33. Joseph Curto of Conway, S.C., dodged a sentence of up to 18 months in prison, getting four years of community supervision instead. The judge said he had to remain employed the whole time.

Curto will need the paychecks, too, because he must repay the workers? comp bureau.

However, maintaining employment shouldn?t be a problem. In fact, Curto?s insistence on working while continuing to receive workers? comp benefits is what tipped off Ohio investigators.

When they heard he was working for a trucking company, bureau officials traveled to South Carolina to confront him. Under questioning, he admitted to working seven different jobs since 1999, when he began receiving total disability payments following an injury suffered while working in Ohio. At each, he used his wife?s Social Security number to hide the income.

Man charged in killings of 2 women in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A Kansas City-area man was arrested Saturday in the killings of two prostitutes whose bodies were found posed on the side of rural Missouri roads nearly a year apart.

At a news conference Saturday night, authorities said Derek Richardson, 27, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandonment of a corpse. His bail is set at $2 million. It wasn't immediately known whether he has an attorney.

"We absolutely stopped a person who was going to kill again," said Kansas City police Sgt. Doug Niemeier, adding that authorities will search across the United States to ensure there weren't other victims.

"We do know that he had travels elsewhere," Niemeier said, "so we will be contacting those states just to make sure."

Police announced earlier this month that the deaths of Tamara Sparks and Nicoleone Reed were linked and asked the public for help. Police said they believed whoever was responsible for the deaths also was the person who lost a size 11, canvas, Crocs-brand shoe at the site where Sparks' body was found.

Niemeier said a tipster contacted police Thursday night because of the description of the shoe.

"Basically the tip was to say he was the one and the shoe was what really matched it," Niemeier said.

Police began trailing Richardson and arrested him late Saturday morning. Niemeier said Richardson confessed to the "intimate details of the crime" and that he didn't know the victims beforehand.

Sparks, 40, was found dead Oct. 4, 2011, on the far northeast side of Kansas City, and Reed, 24, was found Aug. 21 in rural Kearney, northeast of Kansas City. Both bodies were in spots where they could easily be seen, with their pants pulled down and shirts pulled up.

Both women were last seen on St. John Avenue near Independence Avenue in northeast Kansas City, where they worked as prostitutes, police said.

Earlier this month, police said a third woman, who lived on the same street where Sparks and Reed were last seen, was found dumped in late 2011 along the side of a road in Caldwell County, southeast of Cameron. She survived. But authorities didn't say Saturday if her case was connected.

"We have a tremendous amount of follow-up to do now that we have answered some of our own questions," Niemeier said, adding that it "feels good when you can tell a victim's family that their case has been resolved."

Signs You Are Verbally Abused: Part I | Psych Central

Signs You Are Verbally Abused: Part INote: Issues of verbal control can exist in any relationship, heterosexual, gay or lesbian, male towards a female partner or the other way around. Since more is known about verbal abuse in relationships where a guy is controlling his female partner, this article will address those relationships. However, a simple change of gender in any of the names is all it takes to apply the principles to other pairs.

Verbal abuse takes many forms: from loud rants to quiet comments; from obvious put-downs to not-so-obvious remarks that undermine the partner. What all the methods have in common is the need to control, to be superior, to avoid taking personal responsibility, and to mask or deny failures.

The myth in Hank?s and Mary?s relationship is that he is much, much smarter than she is. She does admire him, but not as much as he admires himself. He trumps anything she says with a stronger, maybe louder opinion. He calls her ideas na?ve or ill-informed or even idiotic. Mary thinks he may be right. Since marrying Hank 3 years ago, her self-confidence has plummeted.

Jake, on the other hand, hides his need for control in his relationship with Marilyn under sarcasm, jokes and puns. ?Why,? he says, ?doesn?t Marilyn understand I?m just joking?? Why? Because she is the object of those sarcastic remarks, ?jokes? and puns. He both publicly and privately keeps her off-balance by joking about her insights, her goals, and the things she cares most about. She has come to question her judgment about her ideas and about him. Lots of people think he?s funny. Maybe, she thinks, he doesn?t mean it. Maybe, she tells herself, she needs to have a better sense of humor.

Frank can?t stand to be seen as responsible for any failure. When he makes a mistake, his mantra is ?I may be wrong but you are wrong-er.? If his wife says he has hurt her feelings, he claims not to remember having said what he said or having done what he did. He tells her she is ?too sensitive.? He whines about being a scapegoat for other people?s problems. He doesn?t seem to get that he is the perpetrator, not the victim.

Al isn?t subtle. His wife and kids never know what to expect when he comes home. Will loving, caring Al be at the door with treats for the kids and something nice for his wife? Or will the Al who flies into rages, who threatens them with physical abuse and swears and calls them names show up? The whole household walks on eggshells. Even when loving-Al is around, things can change in an instant if he is the least bit frustrated. Last week when his 5-year-old spilled milk at the dinner table, he yelled at her for an hour. When his wife tried to intervene, he backhanded her. Everyone got real quiet. Then ? the storm blew over and Al left for the rest of the evening.

If you recognize yourself in any of the above scenarios, you are being verbally abused. Make no mistake: Although verbal abuse doesn?t leave visible scars, it does do damage. The victims? self-esteem is eroded. Children who watch one parent being put down and diminished by the other develop a skewed and sad view of how relationships are supposed to be.

6 Signs You Are Being Verbally Abused

  1. Like Mary, you feel you just can?t win. No matter how carefully or kindly you try to work out a problem, your partner says things that make you feel like you?re in the wrong.
  2. Your self-esteem and self-confidence are shot. Your partner isn?t your greatest fan but your greatest critic. He often tells you that his comments are ?for your own good.?
  3. When you say he has hurt your feelings your partner, like Frank in the scene above, tells you that you are too sensitive. When you point out that he has said something inappropriate or hurtful, he accuses you of trying to make him look bad. You notice that he rarely takes responsibility for his part of a problem. Somehow he manages to convince himself and even you that anything that goes wrong is your fault.
  4. You often are the brunt of jokes that make you feel bad. The guy who is fun and fun-loving outside the family unleashes a more vicious or undermining humor inside. Other people don?t believe you that the guy they know is so different from what you experience. Like Marilyn, you find yourself constantly questioning yourself.
  5. You have to walk on eggshells at home. Your home isn?t a sanctuary for you and your kids. It is the place where you are most afraid and embarrassed. You and the kids stay away as much as you can. When you are there with your partner, you all do everything you can to make sure nothing happens that could set him off.
  6. If you?re not very careful, the verbal abuse escalates to physical altercations. Even if you are very careful, what starts with words can end up with physical aggression toward you or destroying things, especially things you value.

Whoever made up that rhyme about ?sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me? was just plain wrong! Words do hurt. They can break a person on the inside just as surely as a whack with a stick bruises the outside. People who are subjected to verbal abuse suffer. People who are subjected to it over time can get so used to it that they lose their sense of themselves as people worth loving. If you see yourself in any of these stories, know you are not alone. There are things you can do. Part II of this article will discuss them.

Wrestling president quits after Olympic omission

Published: Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 7:27 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 7:27 p.m.

PHUKET, Thailand ? The president of the international wrestling federation quit Saturday in the wake of the IOC?s decision to remove the sport from the 2020 Olympics.

Raphael Martinetti?s resignation was announced at the FILA executive committee meeting in Phuket. The Swiss had been in the position since 2002.

On Tuesday, the executive board of the IOC dumped wrestling from the list of sports guaranteed a berth in future Summer Olympics, meaning it must compete with other fringe sports for a spot on the program.

FILA member Nenad Lalovic, who has assumed an interim presidency role, confirmed at a news conference that Martinetti?s resignation was because of the International Olympic Council?s decision.

?It was difficult for a president who wasn?t powerful for 11 years when the IOC decided to eliminate his sport from the Olympic Games,? said Lalovic, adding the new president will soon be elected at an extraordinary congress.

Lalovic said the bid to restore wrestling to the Olympic program would begin immediately.

?Every one of us will have a duty. We have only one goal that is to be back on the Olympics. Lobbying is very important but it?s not something that you can?t determine in advance,? Lalovic said. ?We have to prepare a serious presentation that must be prepared by professionals to present the real picture of our sport. This sport has been practiced by millions of people. We will use this fact in order to promote our sport.?

Now wrestling is no longer a core Olympic sport, it must compete with seven other contenders ? baseball and softball, squash, karate, wakeboarding, sport climbing, roller sports and the martial art of wushu ? in lobbying to earn the last spot on the 28-sport program for the 2020 Olympics, which have yet to be awarded to a host city.

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to choose which sports to propose for inclusion in 2020. The final vote will be made at the IOC general assembly in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

USA. Wrestling executive director Rich Bender paid tribute to Martinetti but said his departure could boost wrestling?s chances of getting back on the Olympic program.

?This decision provides international wrestling with an opportunity to change and improve,? Bender said in a statement on U.S.A. Wrestling?s website. ?The sport will now be able to create a fresh new relationship with the International Olympic Committee and address some of the pressing challenges and opportunities facing wrestling.?

Alexander Mamiashvili, the head of the Russian wrestling federation, wants the FILA extraordinary congress to be held in Moscow in May and said President Vladimir Putin had ordered a committee be formed to contest the IOC decision.

?The group will coordinate and analyze the situation to prove wrestling is worthy of staying in the Olympic movement,? Mamiashvili told the Itar-TASS news agency of a committee that will include the sports minister and all three Russian IOC members. ?The leadership of the country, and personally the president of Russia, has expressed to us their support.?

FILA vice president Stan Dziedzic said he knows what wrestling needs to do to win back its place.

?We need a better public-relations firm, we need to have a better relationship with the IOC, obviously. Those are right on top of the table,? he said. ?We have to tell the world that there is no other sport that is more of a meritocracy than wrestling. No bats, no balls, no gloves. It?s not how fast, how far, how high ? but how much better.

?Two equal size wrestlers ground on the mat to determine who the best is, with the wits and the will to win. Nothing could be more fundamental.?

NJ Sen. Frank Lautenberg outlines plans

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) ? A day after announcing he would not seek a sixth term, Democratic U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg said he will spend his last two years in office fighting for the same causes he always has, including tougher gun control laws.

"I am not announcing a retirement," Lautenberg said in a speech in his hometown of Paterson. "I am announcing today I will be continuing on my mission to do the right thing wherever I can."

Lautenberg, at 89 the oldest member of the Senate, made no mention of any Democrat who he might like to succeed him.

His revelation Thursday he would not seek re-election in 2014 cleared the way for Newark Mayor Cory Booker to accelerate his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat. Booker's announcement in December that he intended to run for the seat had angered Lautenberg, who had wanted the Democratic mayor to hold off until he decided his plans.

Lautenberg also did not say why he decided to retire when his term ends in 2015. He joked at least twice about possibly staying on. "Too late to change my mind?" he asked with a smile.

Asked after his speech who he would like to see take his seat in the Senate, he joked: "Well I'd like to have my wife do it, but she's busy."

Asked why he decided to call it quits in 2015, he said: "Nothing. I think the time with family. My children, my daughters, my grandchildren live all over the country and I want to spend more time with them."

On the issues he will focus on, the liberal Democrat cited gun control first. "We are tired of assaults on our children," he said.

Early public opinion polls had showed Booker as a strong favorite over the incumbent to keep the seat in Democratic hands, but Booker's nascent campaign had been largely on hold until Lautenberg made a decision. Other Democrats, including Rep. Frank Pallone, are also mulling runs.

No Republican has publicly expressed interest in the seat, but a spokesman for the national party viewed Gov. Chris Christie's success in New Jersey as "a hopeful sign" for the GOP's chances even though New Jersey voters haven't sent a Republican to the Senate in 40 years.

Booker created a federal fundraising account allowing him to raise money for the campaign. In doing so, the two-term mayor of New Jersey's largest city dashed hopes that he would challenge Christie in a race for governor that would have pitted two rising national stars against one another.

Though Booker's relationship with Lautenberg has been nettlesome, he issued a statement praising the senator.

"Sen. Frank Lautenberg has been a champion for the people of New Jersey for decades and his legacy of service will improve the lives of all Americans for years to come," Booker said.

President Obama also lauded the reliably liberal senator.

"Throughout his time in the Senate, Frank has fought tirelessly for workers, veterans, members of our military and their families, and immigrants, and he continues to make extraordinary contributions to our nation's safety, and the health and welfare of our citizens," Obama said.

Lautenberg first won election to the Senate in 1982, and became known as a staunch advocate of gun control and public infrastructure and a champion of the Amtrak railroad system. He also crusaded against smoking and youth drinking and supported stiffer environmental laws.

Though he has been easily elected five times and is the Senate's last veteran of World War II, Lautenberg was facing growing pressure to step down. He has had beaten back health problems in recent years. Some within the party noted that if Lautenberg were to die in office, Republican Gov. Chris Christie would get to name a temporary successor.

Christie's popularity, measured in record-high approval ratings after Superstorm Sandy battered the state last year, has given Republicans a sense of optimism for other statewide races in New Jersey, where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by 700,000.

"Gov. Christie has shown that being successful in New Jersey is not a matter of partisanship but rather of leadership, a hopeful sign for our chances in 2014," said Brad Dayspring, communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Lautenberg and Christie clashed frequently, most publicly when the governor scrapped plans for a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York after the senator secured $3 billion in federal grants for the project. More recently, however, the two worked together with other members of the state's Washington delegation to help secure $60.2 billion in aid for the region after Sandy.

"Frank Lautenberg and I have had our differences through the years, but I've always respected him for his tenacity, devotion to the people of New Jersey and his love for and commitment to public service," Christie said in a statement.

Lautenberg was diagnosed with cancer ? and successfully treated for it ? in 2010. A case of the flu this winter caused him to miss the Senate's Jan. 1 vote on avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff.

Lautenberg got into politics after building a fortune as a founder of Automatic Data Processing, a payroll processor. In that race, he defeated patrician Republican Rep. Millicent Fenwick while spending $3 million of his own money.

This isn't the first time Lautenberg has retired. He decided not to seek re-election in 2000, a move that opened the seat for Jon Corzine, who later served a term as governor of New Jersey. But Lautenberg was drafted back into politics two years later when scandal-plagued Sen. Robert Torricelli, a Democrat and Lautenberg's longtime rival, abruptly left the race in 2002.

In 2008, Rep. Rob Andrews challenged Lautenberg in a Democratic primary, but Andrews fell well short of unseating Lautenberg as most of the state's Democratic Party establishment continued to back him.

Gillmor Gang: House of Bacon

gillmor-gang-test-pattern_excerptThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Keith Teare, Kevin Marks, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor ? pondered the debatable relationship between Netflix' House of Cards and the tech community. From HBO's Jeff Bewkes calling the Kevin Spacey series "pretty good" to Comcast buying the rest of NBC/Universal from GE, the economics of streaming TV took a big leap forward. Not so much email, which @scobleizer defended with filters, smart labels, and Sane Boxes. We heard about smart calendars and DM suckage and Apple spoilage, but no matter: it's all about finding more time to devote to binge viewing and meteor dodging. More bacon please.

Shouldn't the Google of China Be Growing Faster Than Google?

Baidu (BIDU) has made great fortunes for shareholders as China?s biggest Internet search company, and no one doubts that it will grow greatly in years to come. But the investment community looks confounded over the value of Baidu stock. Just how much should investors pay for shares in the Google (GOOG) of China, a place where millions of people are just beginning to get online?

Recent analyst comment on the shares has included two reiterated buy/overweight ratings and two sell recommendations. Two others downgraded the shares to holds. Most of the commentary followed Baidu?s full-year earnings and forecasts released Feb. 4, which included 54% revenue growth and 46% operating profit growth that pretty much met forecasts. But its outlook led analysts to predict about 36% revenue growth and 13% EPS growth this year, and the market was looking for more, as seen in a stock chart.

BIDU Chart

BIDU data by YCharts

Baidu is the second largest Internet search company on earth, controlling about 79% of the market in China. (Google all but left China in 2010 over censorship and hacking issues.) Concerns over a Baidu investment now arise from growing competition, especially Qihoo 360 Technology (QIHU), a company with a popular browser that just jumped into search.

The fight between the two companies is bound to intensify. Qihoo and its trash-talking CEO have been widely criticized for unfair competition, like allegedly using software that trick people into searching on Qihoo instead of Baidu. Apple (AAPL) removed Qihoo apps from iTunes, and the company has been warned by Chinese authorities, but it still gained a 10% market share of Chinese search in the few months since it got into the business late last year. It?s the sort of nastiness that can make U.S. investors nervous about investing in Chinese companies, yet Qihoo is clearly winning investor sentiment at the moment. Qihoo shares have nearly doubled in the past six months; Baidu is down 27%.

Baidu's growth, slower than Google's by far over the past five years, is underwhelming.

BIDU Revenue TTM Chart

Baidu is spending a lot of money on technology aimed at keeping the competition at bay. That, along with the fact that mobile searches bring in less money, has put pressure on very strong profit margins that have attracted investors to Baidu shares for years. The margin narrowing alarmed investors. Its forward PE ratio at 20.11 just dropped below Google?s.

BIDU Forward PE Chart

BIDU Forward PE data by YCharts

Baidu skeptics are waiting to see whether its recent profit margin slide is temporary or the new reality for a company that may lose market share amid strong competition. The bulls on the stock see Internet search exploding in China as more and more of the population gets online, and plenty of business to go around.
